Toyota Dealer Asks $100K For Supra Launch Edition Because Capitalism

Edit: It amazes me that this is allowed. It is bad enough when 911R owners flip their car for a profit, or when Ford needs to make owners sign a contract to not sell their Ford GT for a few years, but when dealerships do it through laws protecting their business model then it feels like even more of a dirty middle man practice.

If someone is dumb enough to pay $100K for the car then more power to them. I agree it sucks but just because they ask $100K for it doesn’t mean anyone will pay it.

Some people will always pay a premium if it means being the first kid on the block with a brand new model of car.

Exactly, they own the car, so they can do as they please. If someone buys it then good for them, but I also wonder why the manufacture doesn't charge more, and I also wonder if it hurts the brand. Like other manufactures have limits on how many phones or products can be bought during initial sales, so scalpers can't take advantage, but why should they care?

Dude! That is the very definition of supply and demand.
They are businesses so why not boost the price if people will pay if? If Toyota put it out for $100K they would just sell it for $130K so upping the MSuggestedRP wouldn't change anything. Contrary to popular beleif the dealers have to buy their stock outright. They do not have free cars (to them) sitting there that they pay for when there is a buyer. If they didn't sell any and the dealers had to drop the price to $30K to get them off their lot then they would take the loss. Nobody would whine if that happened though. If the dealers have buyers at that price then good for them for asking it.

You missed it. Read it again or check out post 1328 for clarification.

I said the lack of supply driving the price up isn’t what I care about. Toyota can make as little or as much as they want. It isn’t that I am whining about Toyota supplying few models, giving dealers the means to jack up the price. It isn’t about someone else making money or making the entry price high for other buyers. It is more of a personal annoyance. Just venting and whining about the situation because it just is so odd.

Like I said in the other post, it is odd that manufacturers don’t raise the price. I said MSRP because I don’t know what they call the dealer’s invoice price of the car; the price they pay for the car. If they raised that and/or advertised a higher price for initial models or something then that would seem logical. It also is odd that there aren’t safeguards like other manufacturers put into place with other products, which I guess is done to protect their product or brand image. Maybe in this case it doesn’t matter to them. Still seems illogical, which irks me.

I’ve never been one to stand in line for a new phone, new game console, new anything that commands stupid prices. It’s a waste of money IMO. I would buy new if I could afford it but not at elevated prices.

All the power to those that want to be first with a new toy. It’s good for the economy.

Just a subjective opinion, but it's Chris Harris' opinion:
