Everything is faster than an 86, I'm used to it.

I'm just giving the new Supra a hard time. Maybe people will swap the base motor Supra into the 86 one day?

In addition to the torque, I keep reading that the 6 cylinder hp specs are quoted low. Isn't it likely possible the same is happening with the 4 cylinder?

iirc they have 2 options for 4 cylinders & yes, they used lower hp ver... but realistically speaking we don’t need to worry, cuz they already stated that they’re not bringing 4 cylinder ver Supra to US.

It looks like there was a lot of back in forth between BMW and Toyota about the Z4 and and the Supra.

Toyota - "We want to market the bases Supra around $50-56K.

BMW - "That is what we are planning to sell the 4 cylinder Z4 for. Are you talking about using the 4 cyl?"

Toyota - "UH, no, a 4 Cylinder Supra would have to sell for much less than $50K. It would have to, say, be around $40K.

BMW - "You are not undercutting our 4 Cylinder Z4 by $10K in the US market. That is our biggest market! No 4 cylinder for you at that price!"

Toyota - "Fine, but we still want to sell the turbo inline 6 for $50-56K in the US market!"

BMW - "That is crazy but if that is what you want then FINE! But you are not getting the up horsepower version of the B58. That will be reserved for the Z4 6 cylinder which we are selling for $65K; 382 HP for us, 335HP for you."

Toyota - "Sigh! Done and done. (wink, wink)

(wink, wink) because now Toyota has reserved themselves the opportunity to wait a year or two until initial sales have dried up before they can go back and negotiate a deal for both an upmarket Higher performance Supra (some kind of GRM special) and a lower end 4 cylinder model to dip into the lucrative younger sports car market made up of people who cannot swing payments on a $50K car but might be able to squeak by on a $40K car by eating ramen noodles for 4 years.

Since there are 3 trims of Supra available in Japan, with the lowest having 194hp, it seems like Toyota would have a hard time justifying keeping the 86 alive? I can't imagine the price point between the base JDM Supra and 86 will be very different from each other?

They’ll keep 86. Price difference is big. Base 86 starts from 2,623,320yen. No way base Supra gonna come that close. Even GT Limited Black Package is 3,423,600yen, (for AT ver) even them still cost another 1,000,000~1,500,000 for it (Toyota JP haven’t officially announced for the Supra yet). & that doesn’t sound that bad... but reality is, you can get all the luxury option in high end 86 vs base Supra, you loose almost all of em. Why you wanna do that? There are ppl who doesn’t care bout those “luxury” options, but those ppl are rare kind of ppl. So in that view, 86 & Supra even 4 cylinders will be in different price category.

Kinda surprised a supra community is that worried about the 335hp engine. It's the same exact engine except for the fuel particulate filters required by the EU that the Z4 has in europe. Should be able to remove them, not even sure if you need a tune or not to get back to 382hp after that.

My big problem is that the 4 cylinder is 3100lbs and the 6 is 3400lbs?? The only way to explain this discrepancy is the 4 cylinder weight is without US crash safety features. 2 cylinders don't weigh 300lbs.....

This is bordering on portly for my tastes, although compact package. Will need to see how much weight can be stripped out at this point.

Perhaps features between the two? I'm sure getting rid of power and heated seats, having less speakers (quality and/or quantity), no smart key (reduces amount of wiring and passive antennae), single zone climate vs dual, smaller wheels, etc will get to around 300 lbs. Wouldn't be surprised if the 4 cylinder also had smaller reservoirs for its fluids.

the base 194 hp 4 cylinder sold in japan is a bare bone car for you to dump a 2J in it..... kind like the panda 86 that was offered in japan. Wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't even have a stereo....just like the panda 86.

I thought all Japanese cars typically don't come with stereos but a blank cover in the middle.

Panda Supra one make race bring it ORN!!! Can't wait to see those opened air ducts all over the body.
