Smartphone mount steady enough for track use

I'm looking at turning an old iPhone 6 into an oil/water temp gauge using the DashCommand OBDII app and wanted to know if anyone has suggestions on a mounting solution. Any thoughts? Would love to hear if anyone else uses a similar setup and how they like it.

Get a ProClip dash mount, they are great. I have used one in autocross for the past year and a half with an 8" tablet. Solid as a rock.

I've been using a cheap ebay suction mount and it's never failed me at the track. I just clean the windshield and suction cup with some water before mounting, and to be extra safe, I put double-sided tape behind my device.

I know someone who uses the RAM mount for his phone and says it works well too.

A can tell you that a vent mount is not strong enough for HPDE. I bought a Ram mount recently, and have been experimenting with mounting on the front triangle section of the driver's side window. Got the phone mount that's a custom fit instead of the universal twist style. More secure: http://amzn.to/2nvfOMB

Still working on optimized routing for the power cable. Right now I have a 10 foot lightning cable running from the center console, under the seat and then tucked under the floor mat.

The ram mount suction cup is definitely strong enough, but the universal X-grip has a bit of slop in it, so no good if you're using the phone for accelerometer data, but likely good enough for most other uses.

ProClip looks good, and cheap, probably takes the cake if you want to run a tablet (autoxers running Solo Storm like Justin above), might have one soon.

I got the X-Grip for a ram mount, all my video is very shaky, but it has never fallen off.

I don't mean it will fall out, I mean that my phone can twist maybe +/-10 degrees the way the x-clamp is designed (at least the model I have), so if you are taking accelerometer data, the phone can twist and skew your data. That might be why you're getting shaky video as well, I've never used it to take video so I don't know.

The only time I've gotten shaky video off a suction cup mount (not ram) was when the suction cup was not properly secured.

Do you have a photo of your ProClip tablet set-up? I am going to try running some data this year, and I'd like to buy everything once. I have a 7" tablet and was going to get the mount for it, but I was worried it might not fit with where the ProClip dash mount is located in our car? Thanks.

It should fit. I have an 8" tablet and it's fine. It will cover up some of the controls on the right side but not a big deal. Sorry for the crappy pics, I only swap in the tablet mount when I am racing.

Perfect, thank you! I was worried that the tablet mount would hit the radio.

I love my Scosche. It's good on the track as long as I'm not driving over gators. The vibration causes my phone to slip. Big individual bumps do not.
