Lol took me a second to understand what you’re asking... I painted both lights at the same time, so three coats each light - all with 1 can. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah, after reading my post I probably could have worded my question a little better. Anyways, thanks for the feedback! I'm excited to get started on my lights tomorrow.

So I've finished painting and clearing my lights and overall they turned out pretty good, except for some pretty bad orange peel on the passenger side light. I've tried wet sanding and polishing to no avail. Does anyone have any tips for removing this extra stubborn orange peel?

Looks like tons of sanding was what they needed. This is my first time doing a "real" paint job, so I thought a quick wet sanding with 2000 grit then buffing them with rubbing compound would get them smooth and reflective. In reality each light required an hour of wet sanding plus another hour of buffing with rubbing compound, polish, then wax. There's still some sanding marks, but you can't see them unless you're up close and looking at them in the right light from the right angle. This probably would have been much faster/easier if I had an electric sander and/or buffer...

Thanks to everyone in this thread. I was VERY on the fence about spending the cash on new tail lights when I didn't really like almost any of them on the market and I'm really using my car for track/autocross and spending bigger money on cosmetics makes almost no sense. I have a dark gray twin and I really hated the clear tails from OEM but I didn't really hate the lights. This thread to the rescue.
Here is where I am after three coats of VHT Red (2 light, one medium) and three coats of VHT Smoke (2 light, one medium). I still want to wet sand and put some 2K clear on them for UV protection but I'm almost there. |

I know this is a stale thread but I did the work and here is a pic of the finished product. I did three coats of red, three coats of smoke and four coats of 2K clear.
