Oh, there you go! That spring sets the preload for the contact between the gears. I missed that. The rubber ring must just function as a damper for that mode.

That was my interpretation but I’m afraid the plastic gear is worn to the point the spring is pushing the worm to the limits of the casing. I’m still going to give it a shot because as I said I’ve actually made it worse now. |

I have the same steering rattle/clunk on uneven roads and I know of several other 86/BRZ owners here in the Philippines who have the same problem. Others were lucky enough to have the dealer replace the EPS assembly under warranty. Mine is a 2013 and way out of warranty so I just bought a used EPS, spent yesterday afternoon installing it and now the rattle is gone. I still want to fix my original EPS unit since my car only has 19,000km so I went ahead and inspected it.
The rubber ring under the round pop cap @ermax replaced was still intact on my unit. What I found was that the green rubber piece inside the plastic piece that looks like a ship's steering wheel was completely disintegrated. This piece is in between the motor assembly and the worm assembly. This is the same thing that is causing problems on the Hyundai EPS units and is available separately although they use a pure rubber piece instead of a plastic/rubber combo like in the JTEKT unit. I think this may be the source of my EPS clunk, as I couldn't hear or feel any rattle or play when wiggling the worm like in the Russian video. |

BTW, have anyone from you instead of fixing tried retrofitting newer EPS? IIRC for MY2015 or MY2017 it was fixed, as in even with heavy use on track on slicks didn't overheat and shut off.

Neither could I. I’m tempted to pick up a used on and overhaul the old one as you are. I can’t see a use one lasting long before it’s doing the same thing. If I get a used one I will open it up before hand to get a look at that rubber part to so what it looks like before it is destroyed. Maybe something similar could be sourced to replace it. On thing I don’t look forward to is pulling the unit out of the car. Looks like a pain in the ass. |

I sure hope it does! Although It’ll be a couple more weeks before I can test it out. Currently renovating and moving in to a new house and that is taking up a lot of my free time. You can try it if you have the chance. It’s only $8 for two bushings shipped from Amazon

Yeah I figured you wouldn’t be in a rush to put your original EPS back in the car seeing how your used replacement fixed your noise. I just placed an order for this rubber part. It should be here Monday. Maybe I will have some time to work on it next weekend. If only it was easier to access the EPS. I will be sure to get lots of pictures as I work on it. Is this a part that we could possibly print with a 3D printer?
