2016 Mazda MX 5 Turbo?

Sounds like the new MX-5 is Turbocharged. Personally I'm hoping this starts a little war between Mazda and Toyobaru. We'll Hopefully see the official stats in Sept.

Here's hoping the ND's power/weight ratio is better than the twins' - it would certainly be great to see the competition put a little bit of fire under Subaru and Toyota's collective ass - more motivation for a power bump and torque fix.

I just bought a NA Miata and would certainly consider replacing my BRZ with a ND Miata if it weighs around 2200lbs and makes 200+HP which is what it sounds like is happening.

Don't get ahead of yourself. This engine is gonna be tiny - around 1.5 liters. No way it's more than 180 hp.

Plenty of 1.5L engines out there now that make more than that, that's only 120HP/L which is pretty low by todays standards and tech.

Its also projected to weight 500-600lbs less than the twins currently weigh...

The engine sounds charged for sure. With the current line-up lacking a rotary flagship, I think Mazda is probably looking into upscaling the Miata so I'm not surprised they are turning it into a "revolution".

Isn't the Ford 1.6L EcoBoost Turbo already making 200hp? It's hard for low displacement engines to crack 100hp/L by "today's standards and tech" without a turbo because of emissions. The ND projected curb weight is very impressive nonetheless (the next frontier is weight savings, just look at VW with the Golf 7 and Mk3 TT). But you also need to take into consideration that the current NC is already 400lbs less than the twins.

I considered MX5 when I was shopping around. It's not exactly a direct twins competitor.

Both are RWD and both offer outstanding handling for about the same price, but..

1. One's a coupe, the other's a convertible (unless Suby brings the drop-top concept to live).
2. MX5 has a tiny trunk; twins with rear seats down actually have a very nice sized trunk.
3. MX5 is the opposite of masculine. Personally, I couldn't care less, but plenty of men are turned off by its looks.. and I have a feeling the new one will retain that same character.

#1 reason I crossed MX5 off my list: utterly impractical. Heck, I can theoretically use the BRZ to tow my motorcycle to the track (ramp will easily go in the trunk with seats folded).

After the 2015 Mustang fiasco where people were claiming it would drop 400 lbs and ended up gaining 100 lbs, I'm skeptical of manufacturer's projections. Even the C7 gained weight versus its projected weight loss. The only manufacturer recently I've seen reach its projected weight loss is the mk7 GTI, which managed to shed 50-80 lbs. (projected at -100 lbs.)

That said, if Mazda can produce a Miata at ~2200 lbs. with 180-200 hp AND it comes as a coupe, I could definitely see myself buying one.

Yeah, I've never understood why Mazda always refused to make a coupe version... basically doubling their market for minimal engineering effort....

Exactly. It also effectively eliminate the possibility of using the Miata as a dual-purpose track/daily car, unless it comes with roll bars tall enough to pass broomstick with a helmet on.

Please look that up, based on actual numbers. I know for Europe, that number is at the most 220 lbs and for the US I think the actual difference is even smaller...

I very much welcome the new MX-5 to be lighter. But as Darksunrise stated, I would take any numbers on weight, and weight reduction, with a pinch of salt.

I mean, Remember what the twins weighed in the beginning?
