That's strange you say that, Lexus usually uses slightly souped up run of the mill engines from the Toyota line. They throw on an electric cam phasing actuator here, some direct injectors there, and then call it a day. AKA, not any harder to mod than a Toyota Sienna or Landcruiser or Camry, and I don't think those take 10k minimum to do anything to. When the RC comes out either they'll use an old engine, or they'll use a new one that will also go into the Camry and whatever soon after.

I am not joking at all, she is horribly stereotypical. She gets a brand new Lexus every year, and she has brought the RC-F up.

One thing I'm kind of disappointed with is that Lexus kept the same 3.5L engine in the RC that the IS has had for so long. While its solid and ultra reliable, a new engine would have been great with somewhere closer to 350 HP. I would hate to jump in and see them put a new one in within 3 years.

to be fair a lot of automakers put carryover engines into new bodies.

the new Q50 has the same 3.7 liter motor as the G37

Nissan has been putting the same engine in every car for decades.

This is true, but they're touting this as a new model, not a spin-off of the IS (even though I feel like that's what it is...) so I was hoping for something to differentiate it rather than two less doors and a suspension change. At least with the Q50 it's the evolution of the G37, so the same engine makes more sense.

Don't get me wrong, I would love having the tried and true reliability of the engine, but I guess I was just hoping for this to be their new sporty and exciting car like they're marketing it. This engine is like 10 years old, they've gotta have something in the works for the near future. I'd hate to have regret a year or two after purchase.

Obviously the RC-F is a different story, but if I had that kind of money I wouldn't have much to complain about.

Toyota/Lexus tends to milk the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it" a lot. Hell for the longest time I remember they literally just slapped a 2JZ in everything and called it a day. Worked fine back then and so far it's working for now!

Just curious, why all love for the German cars? I know comparison here is about luxury vehicles, but I don't see the relevance this car has to automatically compare with a BMW or Mercedes Benz.

I will never understand why the younger crowd continually makes euro cars the standard by what you measure everything else by. I can say without any doubt in my mind that the RC-F will be better than anything BMW or Audi could make in that range. Regardless of who has the most hp, most options, etc, Toyota has always made a better engineered, more reliable, higher quality, easier maintained vehicle.

German cars are notoriously unreliable, and if you ever looked say, VW's engineering, it's just...stupid, for lack of a better word.
Overpriced for what they are, expensive to maintain and difficult to work on.

welcome to what we call marketing. the RC is really an IS coupe. same way the Audi A5 is an Audi A4 coupe and how the new 4 series is really a 2 door 3 series. its marketing people. this way automakers can also charge more for the coupe version because "it has a different nameplate which makes a different car".

also both the new IS and RC will be getting a new 2.0 liter turbo. the next IS-F based on the new IS is also rumored to be getting a new V6 TT. which may or may not also be used in the FT-1 (new Supra). so Toyota has their hands full...

back to marketing. this is just a general 8 year life cycle (if you will) that i have seen some automakers do. and of course will variety but you get the idea.
  • automakers will introduces a new body with a carryover drivetrain (years 1-4). people will buy it because its a new body.
  • than about towards years 5-6 they do a facelift. people will buy it because it looks tweaked abit (for better or worst).
  • than the last two years (7-8) than put in a new drivetain or a heavy reworked version. and people will buy it because of the new new drivetain.
