Okay I know this is not cars but I find it hilarious regardless after watching the morning HK news on TV:

"Unauthorised wall work on Hong Kong’s HK$97.1 billion Sha Tin-Central link saw reinforcement bars removed, MTR admits
Contractor accused of ignoring design drawings in two more instances, but railway operator insists irregularities posed no safety risk"

Yep. I am not saying for one second that there are no issues. I am simply saying that the LARGE companies that just happen to make stuff in China are not the same as the internal Chinese industry.

I could also link hundreds if not thousands of similar stories from the US and Canada. China is not alone in construction scams.

You are still using the lower tier industries as your comparison and although there are of course still many crap companies there that make crap under crap conditions (the textile industry and anyplace making stuff for the Dollar store chains for example) all of the big manufacturers have controls in place.
no I'm just saying that even if the plants were shit he wouldn't say that. good way for the board of directors to decide to remove your ass.

are Volvo's plants in China just as good as anywhere else? I don't know. I don't have any data to back that up. someone else's plants making other things doesn't have any bearing on theirs. lots to consider besides the word of a guy who's just is to sell Volvos.

I find it ridiculous people assigning quality based on nationality. How many people wrote their China makes crap products post on their Iphone that was made in China?

Quality for the most part is a function of price. Buy a $200,000 car, it will probable be higher quality than a $30,000 car. REGARDLESS of the country it was built in. Same goes for any product, TV's, appliances, cars, phones etc

Bringing it back to car products, buy a cheap knockoff oil cooler and spend significantly less than purchasing a Greddy or JR oil cooler, once again you get the quality you pay for.
Country has nothing to do with quality anymore, stop living in the 50's

I don't think it is racist, but the association is weak, or the way it is stated is weak. For instance, it would be like knowing there is a statistical correlation between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer, and then concluding that people who are at a high genetic likelihood of getting lung cancer are also genetically predisposed to wanting to smoke. The more likely association is that smoking raises a risk of getting lung cancer, but the former argument is plausible too.

Made in China...

China is a huge, cheap labor force, so many products that are cheap and many products that are made in China are often designed to be cheap too. In the case of the iPhone, Apple designed the phone to be high end with high machining tolerances, and the Chinese deliver when that is the specifications. I see no reason to associate the Chinese people, or the products that come from their country, as inherently cheap, as if it was a flaw in the Chinese work ethic. There are many other nations that are also known for producing cheaply designed products, but none as big and prevalent as China.

If anything, I feel it says more about American companies and consumers, that they design cheap items and want cheap items.

in other news the GF's next suv might be the Volvo XC90. I'm trying to steer towards a Rover Sport or the Alpha but it's going to be hard. Her current car is her all time favorite. 2014 GMC Yukon. what do you tell someone that thinks that's the greatest thing ever?
