86 dct burning smell when downshifting to 1st to slow down

86 dct burning smell when downshifting to 1st to slow down. Could this be the clutches inside the dct or the tranny fluid overheating or is my excess oil leaking somewhere during the throttle bleeping? I do enjoy downshifting with this tranny.

The oil is about 1/3" over the full on original oil. Fyi

Wel to start off the car does not have a DCT nor clutches of any type in the AT. Even if it did they would not be overheating on downshifts.

If you oil is only 1/3" above the hole that isn't the issue either. As said early in this thread it is probably just the new car oil burning off. You just smell it at low speed because it isn't blowing away behind you.

Oooo. *buzzer sound*

There are both clutches and brakes in the AT. They do heat and slip, but not on downshifts.

...or do they? Not outside the realm of possibility.

Not in the DCT sense of the word.

Don't do me like that. We both know that clutches and brakes differ only in whether or not they spin. Automatic transmissions have shit tons of both, and they stink when they fail.

Just because the TCU doesn't allow the engine to overrev doesn't necessarily mean the first gear clutch/brake/whatever can't get hot from repeated hard engagement. I've never done it but if a downshift into first isn't preceded with a solid rev match, shit will eventually smoke. Ask owners of the Honda H5.

Yes. This is a regular automatic transmission. The references I made were that it is not a dual clutch transmission and if it was it could take a downshift without smelling. At no point in time did I say an AT would not. I will give you the fact there are clutches of a sort in the AT but that does not make it a DCT of any type.

That was a great deductive thinking, but in this case it only happens when using the paddle shifters to go from 2nd to 1st. When in D mode and not using the paddle shifters to slow down, there's no smell at all.

I could have sworn it was a DCT. Don't know where I read it but I was wrong. It's just a sequential automatic. I though my car did not have a torque converter because it was a DCT but it's not and it does have a torque converter.

I also assume that the torque converter doesn't lock up from 2nd to 1st when shifting, which means there's no wear and tear in the torque converter because it's just rotating liquid correct? If yes, the wear then is all happening inside the transmission on the brakes/clutches or there is no wear and tear when shifting from 2nd to 1st and the throttle blips?
