dp1 track build (NY)

Base Car
- 2014 Scion FR-S Monogram MT Firestorm, June 2014 - present, primarily track use in North East May-Nov.

Shops and Tuners
- Trusted advisers and parts suppliers: Mike @CSG Mike and David @CSG David from Counter Space Garage (CSG). Wouldn't have gone this far without their support.
- Mechanical: EFI Logics. Top notch shop in North East that I use regularly. Tons of experience servicing and driving track cars.
- Tuner: @DeliciousTuning (DeliciousTuning.com), FlexFuel Flash and Go (FNG) tune. Car feels great on track, AFR looks good through the rpm range.
- Engine Builder: Outfront Motorsports. Thanks to @DeliciousTuning for mentioning their work. Most impressed by (1) Good reputation, (2) Jeremy's openness and honesty about what they do, quality parts and labor, and (3) Confirmation from @CSG Mike who stopped by Outfront Motorsports in person to talk to Jeremy and agree on the final design.
- Sincere thanks to Mike @moto-mike at Moto-East for helping me sort out the car in 2014 after many problems with PrimeMotoring/Prime Motoring (mechanical) and JrTuned/Jr Tuned (tune). I would have never done business with them if a post like this had been available. Mike runs a great shop, is a master Ecutek tuner, owns and tracks a twin.

Consider the following when looking for a shop to build and maintain a track car:
- Few if any bad online reviews (even Yelp), and how any bad reviews are handled,
- Racers and instructors recommend the shop in person (at the racetrack) and online,
- Shop is owned and/or ran by racers who can be seen at race tracks,
- Other track cars can be seen serviced at the shop (Facebook, other online sources, visit in person),
- Shop is focused on track performance builds and not drag strip builds (very different design goals) or stance, bagging,
- Respectable age and experience of people running the shop and working on your car,
- Good experience when dealing with issues, small or big, on-line and in person,
- Good experience working on cars like yours,
- Valuable contributions to the online community, etc.
...choose wisely, your life may depend on it.

Were you the one who hit that stray truck wheel on the highway?

I also have the JRSC kit with the factory tune. Do you feel like you need both the JR oil cooler and Koyo rad to keep temperatures down at the track? My impression was that most people were content with only the oil cooler.

I'm the one...unlucky to catch it but lucky to walk away from it

You need an oil cooler for track but you don't need Koyo rad...I just wanted extra insurance but it's not necessary.

I would say to change out your fluids. OEM fluids just suck big time.

Great build though!

What kind of Oil Temps/Pressures are you seeing on track with the JR Oil Cooler?

Hi Mike, thanks and I agree re fluids, will get them replaced in the spring. Got free (OEM) oil change and tranny fluid when they replaced the tranny under warranty.

Don't have an oil pressure gauge. Oil temps on a very hot and humid track day were in mid 240s iirc.

See that you had fun in Miami, way to go

Track timing evolution: Started with Harry's Lap Timer and built-in iPhone GPS (1Hz - up to 1 sec delay, way too slow to capture fast transitions), then moved up to the external bluetooth GPS Dual 150A (5Hz - up to 0.2 sec delay, much better), and now VBOX Sport (20Hz - up to 0.05 sec delay, pretty much perfect) is on it's way...little pricey but it's a long-term investment.

Go-karting: Great way to fill the winter track/ax void. Took a 1hr 1-on-1 instruction today at GPNY to get into 9hp instead of standard 6hp karts...wow, what a difference.

What made you chose VBOX over AIM Solo?

Hope to see you again at an event this year.

VBOX because I wanted portability and a better GPS, since I review video (GoPro attached to the middle/inside rear window) of my track/ax runs with data overlays. I already use and like Harry's Lap Timer (iPhone) and MX WiFi obd2 adapter.

Ah, so it sounds like you did not want to leave the Harry's/OBDII setup you currently have. I am starting at square one (other than already having a Go-Pro) so I'm trying to make the decision.

Also, Ohlins was on my short list of coilovers for this year, but I think I am leaning towards RCE Tarmac 2 (re-valved/sprung KW V3) instead. Will be pared with RaceSeng Cas/Cam and read 1" mounts, rear LCA and toe arms. Thoughts? Not my daily driver but does see some weekend/winter fun driving.

One last question - Does your P3 work at the same time as your OBDII BT dongle?

That's right, I just wanted a faster and portable GPS, happy with everything else.

Not familiar with dampers other than stock, Ohlins and Bilstein B16. I changed springs on Ohlins and had them revalved, to allow a little more rotation, more at low than high speed. You do want camber in front and rear, at least -2.0 and little more negative in front, so you're looking at the right parts. Also consider adjustable endlinks.

P3 doesn't work at the same time as MX, as both use obd2.

After two years and two done up twins, I've been thinking about alternatives i.e. Cobra GT350 or track prepped C5/C6 (never owned American muscle and already owned Boxster and Elise). However, 3 days at Palmer Motorsports Park with NASA last weekend confirmed that my car is now set up so well for my HPDE and AX needs that I'd be foolish to let it go...decided to keep it for at least another year and a new Scion iA (AT) is taking over the daily commute.
