GR86 driveshaft
Did someone fitted the GR86 driveshaft to older versions?
I'm looking for impressions... |

The driveshaft / propshaft is lighter too, or do you mean what some people call axles? Sorry, naming varies too widely and I am curious

Why not just get a carbon fiber driveshaft and save 5.4kg and remove some of the drivetrain slop?

I can say I saw no improvement in performance with a vastly lighter aluminum driveshaft and doubt 1.5kg's is really going to matter. One of those end of the line mods to me.

A single piece driveshaft will probably vibrate because of wrong pinion angle. You can find a lot of threads about this.

I didn’t see anyone mention vibration with a single piece but since you want to bring it up. Going to a single piece driveshaft lowers the critical speed of the drive shaft which causes vibration, longer shaft, lower critical speed. There are many threads on this. One of them was a DSS aluminum driveshaft which failed on the dyno because of this. DSS has admitted this is the issue and will reshaft an existing DSS driveshaft if you pay them too. The aluminum needs to be at least 3.5” to bring the critical speed up enough to work on our cars though there may be clearance issues, I talked to DSS about this myself as I have one of their aluminum shafts. The carbon does have a higher critical speed and issues with vibration on those may be down to pinion angle also being a factor but nobody has confirmed.

Fwiw people on this thread are saying that the DSS carbon fiber driveshaft didn't cause any additional NVH https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...t=39701&page=3. But as NoHaveMSG said, he didn't notice any performance increase from going to an aluminum driveshaft which is lighter than the 2nd gen driveshaft. There are more cost effective ways to cut weight provided that you havent exhausted your other options.

Buyer beware. Most vendors don't provide and warning about critical speed or pinion angle for the twins. Curiously the DSS shaft for WRX/STI does come with a 155 mph recommended limit. See below.

This is all absolutely OT. There are tons of threads for single piece driveshafts and this is not one of them.
Moderators, please clean the thread. |
