The smell I get isn't brakes or clutch, it smells more like differential fluid.

You could certainly check the diff for leaks. But also check the cam plate on the backside of the engine on the passenger side, it's about 5" tall and 2" wide. Use a paper towel and rub around the bottom edges to see if there is oil residue. You may also see some burned oil residue on the exhaust right below it. Do a search for the Raceseng cam plate to see more detail, they make a nice aftermarket plate for it.

It's definitely the diff fluid smell, but I have been looking at that plate and the problem it fixes. I have smelled the burning oil smell a few times and thought it may have been the cars in front of me as it would dissipate after they weren't around.

I'll have a look-see around my mechanical bits when I'm home during the daylight.

My nose is tuned for every automotive smell now, the only ones I have a hard time telling is brakes and clutch disc because they are sometimes the same material. Also ATF/PS for the same reason.

It's crank case venting and blow by burning off at WOT. Do yourself a favor and pick up a catch can at least for the EGR side. It'll keep your engine clean and happy.

Only about 4 years late, but my '15 BRZ is leaking oil at the filter under high RPM and it's causing a horrible smell. Not enough to worry about the level (check it often), but enough to burn and smell. Hoping it's a bad filter, been too cold for an oil change.

Might want to look into it. It may be as simple as your oil filter or something similar to a timing chain cover oil leak.

I had a timing cover leak that was slowly sweating oil out. The smell was oil burning off the header.
