I have a 2006 WRX and it also produces this smell when driving it hard.
FYI have the car for 5 years before I sold it to buy my BRZ. Now I have a BRZ and it also produces the smell. CONCLUSION "ITS a SUBARU IDENTITY I guess" |

Same thing with my AT. Noticed it within 2 hours of buying the car. Doesn't seem as strong now (almost a week later), but I do notice it every now and again.

I get that odd smell too when I run the engine hard. Pretty sure it's not clutch because I can smell it even on a one-gear pull (i.e., no shifting). The good news is it's going away, but I do smell faint traces of it even at 1500 miles on the odometer now.

My car has a little over 400 miles on it and it is still a stinker. Any car I've owned before never took this long to get rid of the burning stuff off smell.

Usually any new car takes a little driving. They all should have that new smell, usually the what I like to call, setting your territory in the new car. If you smell something else after 50 miles of driving, it could be but very unlikely a minor leak. But it also could be when the clutch is being dragged between shifting. How many miles do you have in the car so far?

The original odor that I was experiencing is now gone but a slight odor does occur during harder more aggressive pulls. Does not last long at all and not concerned any longer. I would say normal. As of now I am at 7155 on the OD.

Gerbels... Gerbels are the possible cause of the odor that every FRS / BRZ boxer motor emits at high rpm. Those gerbels in the engine are crapping themselves while running their little feet off to keep up revs above 6k. There may be a factory recal for the gerbals, to exchange with higher perfroming gerbals.

I belive the odor comes from the kind of wax that covers the engine. I have this green wax all over the engine and when gets hot it gets more liquid. I believe it is something to protect new motors and hope it will desappear by itself with time.

Just saw this thread.
I had the smell too, only comes under WOT. When you are at WOT and higher RPM your A/C switches off so you get all the power out of the motor. This is kind of annoying on a 40deg day (105 Fahrenheit) and the interior has yet to cool down. (my DBW controller helped) Anyway, the smell comes from the A/C switching off and then back on again. The smell in mine has gone now after 10,000km (work it out yourself's) Also, the clutch did smell when new, first few days of driving it was really bad every time i took off, but that went quickly.
