If they went through the trouble to pull the plugs (the hard part) and do a compression test, it's about 1 more minute to put a camera in there and look around.

Best of luck to OP!

Kinda got really lost/confused on all the talk of oil on page 4. Not trying to thread jack just curious what all the numbers in the oil stand for and how to figure out what means what and how it relates to fat tires and outside temperature. I'm really noob to this kinda stuff. If someone would be willing to send me a PM or just reply i'd be thankful for it!

Likely it was a result of detonation caused by wrong settings in ECU. When you try to squeeze last drop of power this is what happens. When you alter factory algorythm, you should alway run car with datalogger and review collected information periodically. Otherwise you never know what in that change caused failure and why

Random internet speculation: Advanced timing fault code+hole in piston=Piston contacting valve leading to hole. I'd ask the dealer to replace the entire engine.

Holes in pistons mean debris in the engine. I've seen dropped small parts in an engine manage to migrate to every cylinder and destroy multilple parts.

I would tend to agree. Detonation can cause holes in the pistons but with all of the VVTi related codes I think it's more likely there was some valve to piston contact from the timing being off due to other issues. Would love to see pictures of the damage though.

random experiance..first time a valve contacts a pistoin the stem bends and that hole stops running very well.. = no compression...only time I have seen a hole in the piston and a valve contact issue is when the valve head breaks off and makes the hole in the pistion.

Holed pistion are usually caused by very lean A/F mixtures or detonation (though detonation is more often the cause of cracks than holes). If valve contact caused a hole, there will me much more damage than "just" a hole in the piston. JMO.

I've had lots of overly lean problems in the past, a hole in the piston was not one of them, but that's not to say that ain't it. I had cracked ring lands (twice), blown head head gaskets, warped heads, melted pistons (side melted down losing compression), detonation leading to deterioration of head (then to blown gaskets).

When I've had a hole in a piston (twice) it was caused by 1: lost a valve and 2: nodes of the Bosch +4 spark plug came off in cylinder and that was that.

I'm really curious to see how this plays out. I also hope pcasso is on the receiving end of some good customer service.

We have DI and port injection, so carbon build up is not an issue. I had my intake manifold off last week, and the valves looked great at 8,000 miles.
