A few updates on the car.

I was getting ready to head out to dinner , so I went and started the car, lowered the windows for it to cool down, and let it idle for a few minutes before we headed out.

Once I went back into the car and started driving, I detected a strong gasoline smell. I immediately turned back, parked, and took another car. Once I came back, I started it again, and nothing. No smell. Outside conditions had cooled down, instead of just slightly muggy from when I first started the car.

Removed the rear seats and checked for any apparent leaks on the visible lines. Nothing. Removed the smaller rubber seal and smelled around, slight smell noticeable but nothing that could've made the whole car smell so strong.

I did notice a very small amount of mouse droppings, but the seats were intact, which indicated that at some point I might've had a mouse but nothing more than that.

I recreated the same scenario; lowered windows, let it idle. No result, no smell. Revved the engine a few times, smoke was steam as expected from outside conditions. No smell coming from engine bay. Everything looked and sounded normal.

Tried recreating it the next day, nothing came out.

The car is currently at the dealership, out of an abundance of caution, just in case there is some damage to either the fuel pump, or the fuel lines. The fuel pump assembly was replaced a little over a year ago because of the recall.

Here's what I think probably happened;
1. Un-burnt fuel coming out of the engine bay making its way through the hole where the sound generator used to be.

2. Muggy conditions plus heat could've made the exhaust fumes to make their way into the cabin.
3. Leak on the exhaust somewhere near the cabin area.

4. Bad fuel mix?

5. The battery seems to be on its last days since Voltage indicates a little less than 14V, if slightly revved that car wants to bog down until it picks up back to 14V. This could've caused the engine not being able to fully burn fuel due to power to spark plugs.
6. Leak on fuel pump.
7. Leak on fuel lines due to mice.

Ha, as I finished typing the post, dealership called. Everything is normal. No leaks anywhere or damage of any kind.

Im leaning towards a bad fuel mix from a local gas station.

Im very glad too it was nothing at all. Or maybe it was and they didn’t want to tell me. Anyways. Goad to have it back, just in time for tomorrow when the new exhaust arrives.

Probably just wind and warm up idle rich mixture hitting the perfect moment to blow those fumes into your face.

I barely smell anything these days. When I was briefly fully catless the smell drove me nuts.

Yeah, good heads up there. My new muffler's exhaust gasses smelled like unpleasant melting stuff for a while.

Update on the car.

It was involved in yet another parking lot incident, with another truck. Same thing as last time. Truck owner pulled out of his spot way too early and his rear bumper managed to clip, from the driver quarter panel to the front bumper, and effectively rip part of the bumper out. If it wasn't because of the front tow ring license plate holder, it would've been completely ripped out. The damage is extremely similar to what happened the first time.

Damage to the vehicle appears to be solely cosmetic, and will definitely be looking into a complete front bumper replacement.

It is a little difficult to come to terms with these kind of things, and I always tell myself to not get upset about things that I cannot possibly control. Its a material thing and it won't be the last time, but is hard. Even more so when the rental replacement is a fcking Kia Soul.
