If someone could identify an event that would have taken place over 100,000 years ago in our evolutionary process that allowed us to veer into profound intellectual superiority compared to all other species known to exist, they would confound all religion.

The issue with inbreeding of many dog breeds has been well recognized for decades now. It is a real and undeniable concern that affects many health aspects of dogs not just their intelligence.

The sad part is that people seem to think that Homo Sapiens are the pinnacle of intelligence. In 100,000 years from now Homo Futurum paleoanthropologists may study us and say "boy were they dumb"!

To the best of our knowledge, we are. SETI hasn't come up with much in what, 40 years or so?

I mean on a human evolutionary scale. SETI is going to have a rough time contacting whatever humans are in another 100,000 years.

We just have to wait for the Enterprise to warp through one of those temporal disturbances that seem to congregate around Earth for some unexplained reason. They'll come straight to us to save some whales or whatnot.

Who is to say they didn't already do that? We would never know the difference.

Funny thing, there was a story about dogs understanding human languages on the morning show today. The weather girl is of Indian (India not North American) decent. She said that her dog new words in Punjabi than English. She blamed her parents saying; Mom and Dad you were to teach my daughter Punjabi! Instead you taught our dog Punjabi and my daughter broken English with an Indian accent.

Look man, just cause you’re cat person…

That’s just like statistical work, garbage in garbage out. I’m not advocating for consanguineous breeding, but the reality of now knowing genomic data for dogs and having a decision that you back genotypes rather than strictly phenotype allows for healthy dogs. I don’t like breeding in the first place. I’ve told many people to fuck off when asked if I wanted to stud my first basset and subsequently later if someone could breed their male with mine.

I don’t want to buy an econo box Chevrolet because I know the quality is miserable. That doesn’t prohibit me from buying a car altogether. Likewise, I know there are some very deleterious affects of negligent backyard basset hound breeders. There are also very responsible people that look at animal’s genes for issues.

There’s lots of mutts that live lower quality of life based on biological factors than their homozygous cousins.

This is partly why I went to a breeder for Haru that keeps health pedigrees and stuff for their breeding line.

I don't hate the "adopt, don't shop!" slogan, it exists for a great reason. But I also felt like it was the right thing to do to keep encouraging professional breeding.

I know not everyone agrees with that idea and that's ok, I still feel guilty for the dogs in shelters. But I think at some point there needs to be some give/take .

Hold up there big boy! I didn't say all bred dogs have issues nor that mutts did not I simply replied to your broad and all encompassing statement that the people saying such are a bunch of "nerds". Which of course at least implies that you felt that it was not true.

I don't think there will be many issues if people want to breed their male with yours though.
