Checking in with cricket. Noticed it at about 450 miles.

FWIW I happened to meet a Subaru engineer last week (no bull) and he and I talked for a bit about the various issues with the BRZ. The chirping is caused by the direct injection system and Subaru is well aware of it. Apparently they're working on a TSB right now. Also the seat belt loop is getting a redesign but he didn't mention if existing cars will get a retrofit. Subaru is also toying with an ECU reflash to lessen and or eliminate the torque dip.

"But there’s no mistaking the noise. This car is loud, and not in a particularly nice way. There’s no crisp exhaust note, no induction wheezing. It’s just the sound of petrol exploding in a metal box." - Jeremy Clarkson

As a future buyer this makes me happy... if true.

In protest, lets all send Toyota and Subaru this link and see if they like it and could live with it.

I'm curious as to how long that lubrication will work on the noisy washer but I'll keep you posted.
It will keep working for as long as you add it to the fuel.
That 50ml added before filling the tank up is a 1000:1 mix and shows how little is needed to fix the lack of lubrication in the fuel.

Our MkV 2.0T GTI always made a similar noise at idle. It's the direct injection system. Makes the car sound like a diesel.

At the red light I came accross Lexis IS350, which I believe has the same exact DI. It had exact sound at idle as my car, sitting next to it :-) DI at work does sound like diesel, and I don't think it bothered driver or Lexus.

I think the IS350's engine has a cover that helps to mask the DI sound though.

Could be. Don't know.

On the way home I stopped at Redwood to get 3 gallons of 100 octane racing fuel. 3 gallons mixed with 10 gallons of 91 octane gave me 93 rating.

I don't know if Sunoco 100 octane contains ethanol or not, but engine is running smoother and quieter.

I hear many M3 and 997 drivers do the same in the area. At 7.29 per gallon, its not bad. Still under 50 bucks for a fill up.

P.S. It does contain slightly less ethanol, 9.5%: http://www.racegas.com/fuel/19

So its a matter of fuel type that initiates the chirping from the DI?

I think its a matter of ethanol + whatever makes HPFP to operate differently (ECU?) in this car, with different octane fuels.

I don't have pronouced chirps - just DI sound working. Sometimes louder, sometimes quieter. 1400 miles as of now. VIN067x. But I like the 100+91 mixture from 76 station in Redwood.

Spent some time on Porsche's forums - same story with ethanol discussions.
