No kidding - TrueCar indicates 27%+ off msrp for a typical 500.

Fun to speculate on the pricing.. A Miata Grand Touring model with keyless entry at $31,0xx and a Club with Brembo package is $32,820 with a bare bones Sport at $25,735.

My gut feeling is they will start with two or three models upon entry.. a mix between Sport and Club to get underneath $30,000 and a loaded GT cruiser plus an introductory 'special edition' loaded with a bit more lipstick that they'll sell with mark-up. For sure this should be the brand's halo and be near or set the upper end of the pricing (currently 500X).

I'd peg an additional 15% for brand, engine and interior premium. Something like $29,xxx and $34,xxx plus some options/accessories.

And what about that 1.7 liter Alfa 4c engine detuned to 200 hp for the Abarth 124?! The Spyder was Fiat's largest volume seller in the US before their departure... But I think more realistic Abarth will have a modified multiair at 190+ hp, revised brembo package inc. larger wheels/tires, some paint and stripes and sell at $37,5xx+ That will take far less dollars and cents to get designed, tooled, and tested.

My predictions on driving: the Fiat will have slightly muted steering, less body roll but less communication due to greater weight and poorer weight distribution, and the steering will be even lighter. Everyone will wish for a car that has the power band (and exhaust note!) of the 124 but the athleticism of the Miata

Accounting for adjustment you'll be at Miata prices by end of MY 2.

Speaking of Alfa.. I think the new Miata has some Alfa Spyder influence (as well as F-Type Jag) in its lines.. would be curious to see a new Alfa Spyder cousin of the Miata. Call it the Veloce, price it at $38,000-$48,000 and really crank that sucker up with that 1.7 at 233 hp, take the brakes from the Giulia, use a few c/f bits here and there for bling and keep some of that floaty goodness of the Miata with a seriously RED paint job. That keeps a healthy separation to the 4c ($55k+) and inline with the Giulia anticipated pricing ~$35-55k+

What a fantastic family tree that would be for the little roadster that can, excellent genes to breed from

Front looks somewhat like the new Mustang.

Rear is remniscent of past Miatas.

I wonder how the Miata would look with the Fiat rear end instead (or vice versa).

Would the 1.4 most likely bolt right up to the ND then?

The block makes it make sense. I figured a turbo+IC+plumbing wasn't worth 100 lbs by itself, especially with a smaller engine.

Front is hideous. It literally looks like a truck. The rest just looks like random mismatched parts tacked on, there's no cohesiveness at all.

I'm sure it will be an absolute blast to drive with the turbo engine, like a Mazdaspeed NB but with a bit more refinement.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks more similar to a NC than a ND? Those wheels probably didn't help either.

This thing honestly doesn't fully trump the ND Miata, but rather has areas where it's better and areas where it's worse. The biggest reason I wouldn't buy one compared to a Miata if I liked cars without a top is that Mazda reliability.

Unless its considerably cheaper, MIATA IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER.

Looking at it more now, Fiat really should have designed the front and the grille to be more retro looking.

Abarth 124 Spider Comes With 170 HP And An Attitude

Quote:
If more grunt, heritage and “technical DNA” is what the recently-launched Fiat 124 spider needed, then the newly-unveiled Abarth variant is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Developed with input from the Abarth Racing Team, the car apparently exemplifies the brand’s core values: performance, craftsmanship and technical excellence.

Conceived to be a perfectly tweaked sports roadster, the new Abarth 124 spider comes packed with lots of goodies, specifically implemented to provoke a wide grin to anyone sitting in the driver’s seat. And it’s not hard to believe, considering that it comes with a limited-slip differential as standard, a lightweight construction and a perfect weight distribution.

Weighing only 1,060 kg, evenly distributed front and rear for a perfect 50/50 split, the Abarth has a power-to-weight-ratio of 6.2 kg/HP, setting a new benchmark in the sporty roadster segment. Weight saving was an important factor while developing the car, as the engineers tried to shed every gram where possible to ensure a lightweight construction without damaging the balance of the car.

Nothing was left unaltered on the vehicle, and the new "Abarth by Bilstein" dampers, together with stiffened anti-roll bars and Brembo braking system with aluminum front calipers guarantees a dynamic setup.

Under the hood lies a four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine that delivers 170 HP (about 124 HP per liter) and 250 Nm of torque. Enough to push the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.8 seconds and all the way to a 230 km/h (123 mph) top speed. To further enhance the car’s sporty character, Abarth added as standard the so called Record Monza exhaust, capable of chancing the four-pot’s note.

The Spider is available with a six-speed manual or the automatic Sequenziale Sportivo gearbox, the latter being carefully tuned to exploit all the engine’s torque and “convey genuine racing sensations”, as the company states. A sport mode is also available to boost the performance and response of the paddles behind the steering wheel.

An aggressive bodywork comes with the territory when wearing the Abarth badge. The redesigned front bumper with its large air intake. the rear bumper’s aerodynamic extractor, the rear spoiler and the wind stop were all shaped in the aerodynamic tunnel in order to improve the flow of air. The bonnet humps together with its blackened-out color are just some of the direct references to the original 124 Spider.
