Um, no. That's not how it works. Let's just put it this way, it would be dangerous if one could recycle their own breath in a bag without getting uncomfortable.

And, no, water ice does not do just as good of a job. Temperature differential plays a huge part.

I get that, but the sublimation of the dry ice has to introduce a fair amount of CO2 into the local atmosphere. I'd be hesitant to use that in a confined area, even if it was part of a cube farm.

You are correct on temperature differential, however, if its a hot office, ~32º air is going to feel just as good as whatever is coming out of your CO2 diffusion system.

@HunterGreene, I can't quote you because of the degree symbol.

The air coming out of that thing will be nowhere near 32F either way. The heat transfer isn't nearly that efficient. With the dry ice, the air out will be 68 degrees versus 70. :P It's more placebo than anything but she was thrilled.

She works behind the counter of a wide open retail shop.

I knew it would be gone soon. We will probably see 20 more over the next week.

True. Been a while since my thermodynamics days, so my knowledge is a bit rusty. Also, I suppose any danger is mitigated by the fact that its a wide open area and co2 sinks. Just keep your face away from that tube.

Like I was saying, there's the physiological aspect as well. One would become very uncomfortable and have labored breathing way before any danger of asphyxiation. When you re-breath your own air or just hold your own breath, it becomes uncomfortable not because of oxygen deprivation, but rather the buildup of CO2. That's partly why CO is so much more dangerous. The body doesn't perceive it as a threat.

Actually, if it has actively dripping and growing stalactites and stalagmites, it's a "cavern" and does not have openings that allow dry air to enter the space. It is only a cave when it becomes exposed to outside air and the moisture dries up. This halts the building process for the stalactites and stalagmites.

I learned this last year when I visited "Inner Space" cavern in central Texas.

What if the cave is really deep and they are still growing in the back... is it a cave or a cavern?
