Why would you drive all the way to Austin, Tx just for an exemption?

No need sir. Most of the countryside of Northern California’s 530 and 707 area codes are smog exempt. Surprisingly, CARB isn’t as unreasonable as everyone thinks. They aren’t interested in sweating the small stuff like having ten thousand people or less in a rural area smog their car. My parents lived only 30 minutes north of Santa Rosa, and they were smog exempt, when realistically, would requiring people to drive 30 minutes (or likely less) to an area with a smog shop to smog a car biennially only after eight years of ownership or during title transfers really be putting people out that much? They could, but they don’t. Now my parents are retired further up north on Clear Lake near two of my brothers, and that area is also smog exempt.

That's interesting! I grew up in the 707 and we always had to smog. Guess i was in an unlucky zip code.

If this car was lighter than what I have now like I was doing a track build on a stripped out 86 then I would consider staying NA with a K24 swap and doing a 300hp build, but as it is, this will be getting a turbo setup either initially or down the road. If this was going in a Miata RF or something just as like like a Lotus/Jannarelly then again, NA all day long, but the car is too heavy to stay NA for my preference.

I wouldn't be surprised if JR developed something for the 86 platform. I use to have turbocharged cars, and after having a PD supercharger, I would consider another, or even something that is between the two like a centrifugal supercharger. A turbo has a little more drama and screams JDM to me that I am leaning that way. If I wanted NA feel, which feels great, than I would do a NA build or stick to a LS3. Naw, I will turbo.
