Now (straight from the Interweb) "Rust is a chemical reaction that involves the exchange of electrons between atoms".........

So, how many atoms are in a rotor? How many atoms are in a molecule of water? How many electrons in a atom of Iron? How many electrons in a atom of water? What is the speed of electrons? (hint - it's right up there with the speed of light).

So, there ya go ....... just do the math ........ and you will see ........

I agree that the amount of rust wouldn't take too long to build up (it could happen in a day or two under typical conditions); however, there are some problems with some of your assertions.

A single molecule of water has 3 atoms, two hydrogen and one oxygen.

An Iron atom has 26 electrons in its ground state, but when oxidized it typically loses either 2 or 3 electrons (only the outer most electrons participate in chemical reactions).

Iron has a molecular mass of about 56 grams per mole, so a typical rotor has about 10^25 to 10^26 atoms of iron (really, only the number of surface atoms matters since the rotors are only rusted on the surface).

Electrons move quickly in their own orbits, but move pretty slowly between substances (individual electrons move at velocities measured in centimeters per second). In electric current, the electrons interact with each other and transfer current at about 75% the speed of light.

The more salient speed is the oxidation rate of the metal which is highly dependent on a number of variables, especially: presence of water and salts, temperature, and surface area.

Hand warmers are usually made of finely powdered iron that rusts. The oxidation happens so fast that the heat energy is released quickly enough to greatly increase the temperature of the package (the reaction is exothermic and releases heat energy normally, but usually the heat energy is dissipated before the temperature increases noticeably).

As a bonus, stars only twinkle because of the Earth's atmosphere. The process is called scintillation and happens because the light from the stars travels at different speeds and is thereby bent (refracted) when it passes through regions of differing density in the atmosphere. The refracted light appears to slightly change where it appears to come from and we see that as the familiar twinkling.

YIKES! A scien-teest out of Grapevine, Texas, has helped quantify this situation. I'll bet you're a graduate of Texas A&M .....

OK, @Tcoat , there you have some numbers to plug into the rusting rotor equation.

So, who is going to do the math........??

Oh, 14sty , I enjoyed your referenced video ....... I can't wait to show it to my toddler granddaughter tomorrow morning ...... after she does her little twinkle twinkle song and dance .......

Hey, @cjd where did you run off to, you started all of this ........

@Ultramaroon ...... surely you have something to add ........

How much rust could a rainy rotor rust if a rainy rotor rusted rotten in the rainy reaction.

Say that 5 times fast.

And to think that I was accused of over thinking this!

I can walk 20 feet outside my office and look at a 4 ton hand warmer consisting of very fine iron dust and water. The dust does indeed oxidize so fast that the bin can reach 300 degrees after about a day.

I can walk a little further to the test lab where I would expect to see a light coating of rust on a rotor after about 48 hours in the brine tank. The amount of rust will accelerate to something about 20% of the rotor in that picture once the part is removed from the tank and exposed to the air.

I can go to the back of the plant and look at several hundred scrap rotors sitting in open bins for a couple of weeks. They are starting to approach that level of rust.

That rotor has not had a pad against it for some time. I would presume that the picture was taken well after the incident.

I said nothing of the time between the event and the picture, just that it was raining when it happened (both the rust and the fact there was an incident). I'd guess the pad compound contributed to the speed at which surface rust appears, and it was a day or two between at most. Also that the brakes may have been hot when this happened...

I'm probably wrong. But its fun to play the game.
