Personally I will stay with 0w20 and run a better quality oil like eneos sustina.
It would be much welcomed if you could elaborate on what have you learned on training that leads you to conclude the oil recommendation by the Toyota/Subaru engineers who designed the car is wrong.

Just curious...was any of the VVTi changed prior to your modding? Or was it the stock VVTI that is known to throw CELs and has a TSB for replacement since Aug of last year?

As you said do whatever you want. Subaru and Toyota SUGGEST 5w-30 though for severe usage which likely means their experience (instead of book based training by a corporate trainer) matched my own data that we see low oil pressure with 0w-20, especially when warm and at high RPM. 0w-20 is great for Eco though. Based on my data alone my car will never see 0w-20 again.

Why not 0w-30 instead for better cold start protection?

That's also fine.

In this scenario it's the second number that's more important. So as Dave said, 0W-30 is fine. My favorite oils don't come in 0W-30 though.

Because 0W-30 generally has inferior properties (lower HTHS for example) to 5W-30.

I'm using the Motul 8100 X-Lite 0w30 which has fairly good reviews.

I hate to go there, but could you be running into oil starvation problems. I haven't heard of any problems yet, but Subarus in general are know to have problems. If you have big sticky tires all the oil might be stuck in the head.

The cam timing is adjusted by oil pressure, so if it is starting to drop they may not adjust properly. I have no idea what the required pressure is vs when the sensor reports low pressure.

Of course you should also just plain make sure the oil is full.

It's very easy to tell with a compression test. The smoking on startup happens with the cracked ringlands, here is a video:

But the codes you are getting aren't indicative of it and usually there is no associated noise/rough running until things get really bad.

Hey I know the guy that started the car! small world hahahaha. He has a Corvette now.

Oil pooling in the head at high Gs, very typical Subaru problem...same with cracked ringlands. I hope neither are the case here.
