Many of those old Tamiya RC vehicles hold their value way better than the real thing. Even the old drive by wire model kits can command big bucks now since many were JDM only.

Garage
Went out to the garage to get started on spring prep. Get the Quickjacks hooked up, tools out, take the car out for a spin, change the oil, and be done for the day (leave the car up since I need to replace a spherical bearing and do an alignment... probably bleed the brakes over the next week-ish and some).

Then spend the afternoon with my wife in this amazing weather.

Instead I cleaned the garage. Might still pull off the quick drive and oil change...

I can't believe how much junk I keep. Some of it was there when we moved in! why. WHY?! (an electric motor, washing machine or ceiling fan I'm not sure...) Now in the trash waiting to be scavenged or tossed.

At least the weather is good.

He is very regal and not overly large. I imagined a much bigger dog actually.

Wish I could have been productive today. Instead I had to skip the autoX event I had pre-payed for to stay at work all weekend and rebuild the damn heat treating furnace again

I swear the controls are overheating the elements but the MFG says no. They say the it's perfectly normal for the controls to run full 60amps at 480 without cycling from 0-1850F. That just doesn't sound right to me

do you think you could still get the proper temp running 3 elements per series string?

it would push each string a little bit less instead of the 2/string i recall it running before. i'm doubtful that it would get up to the temp needed though.

I’m not sure. I’d have to draw it out and see if I could run 3 and still create a balanced load.

remind me again, what is the issue you're trying to correct? it's burning up elements too fast?

the more nuclear option would be to install an isolation-type transformer before the heat treater and use the taps to vary the output down to lower the voltage in an effort to reduce the heat at the coils--but again, it's going to make it harder to get up to and maintain a specific temp over how it's set now.

Yes, used to get 3-4 months out of a set, now only getting about a month. 44 elements at 300 each

Mfg has blamed unbalanced load, and not running a full set of elements at a time. Neither of which has been a problem the last 3 years. Last summer we blew the transformer that runs that area of the shop. Let the smoke out of the analog option card in two if the temp controllers, and all three lost their programming. I sent them all in and had the two repaired, plus bought an extra, but the day the transformer let go is when we started having issues.

i was assuming you know what a tap is, but i'll explain really quickly, just so we're on the same page--- 'taps' are different connection points within the transformer to vary the output voltage.

is the replacement transformer tapped exactly the same? this is my first concern. if the transformer was replaced, they had to re-tap it, but they might have re-tapped it to account for an assumed voltage sag at load that might not have been done before.

is this a transformer part of your companies property or is it the electrical providers transformer?

every time i've set a transformer, i leave it at the factory tap points, power everything up, measure each leg, and then power-down and re-tap to get as close to the specified voltage as possible.

do you have a bluetooth meter that you can clip on and safely monitor/record the voltage sag while the machine is running? i'm wondering if there could also be a voltage sag issue if the transformer was improperly sized for the loads you're running, and it's causing a brownout scenario within the machine.

i remember you saying before that the elements were custom built buy a guy-- is there a spec sheet for how quickly they're supposed to come up to temp, or hold a specific temp? measuring that rate could also show if there's an electrical supply issue if it rises to temp faster than it should.

Shit post probably not worth responding to:

One of my license plate lights failed, u think I'll get pulled over if I disconnect both of them?
I pulled out the one that wasn't working, sure enough the filament is broken. I dont want to get led bc I have never found it cool to have extremely bright/visible license plate. If a cop is behind me at night, his lights will illuminate the plate, I dont really see the point of buying new e6 bulbs for the lp light. I would be aghast if anyone ever noticed my lp lights were out
