Everything finalized, but finding an open CNC machine is tough. Although I had a local business to me offer free use of a 4 axis CNC if I wanted to use it to play around....
Now the problem is teaching myself how to program one, so maybe next decade???

Currently building 3 other engines for people has hindered my free time to do such tasks

You taught yourself Solidworks, so I have no doubt you can teach yourself basic 3-axis machining pretty quickly. You will probably want to use a CAM software for the throttle control box at least. It will save you a lot of time over programming by hand.

I couldn't really tell from the pictures if you did, but you should be able to simplify the throttle control box some for machining. For example don't machine the strengthening ribs by the motor bearing. Make the top of the ribs the new bottom of the cavity ( assuming there is clearance).

Feel free to ask questions about CAD/CAM. My job is designing forge tooling using CAD which then gets machined by the in-house die shop who use CAM.

Keep up the good work!

I can also suggest my services to help convert your SolidWorks part(s) to GCode. I've used Edgecam in the past. I would just need their machine definitions for the 4 axis and to know what tools they have available to get started..

I would also be willing to help tutor you with setting up the CAM! We could do remote sessions.

Did they tell you what software they typically use at that shop?

I will do some looking around. thanks for the heads up. Honestly the hardest part will be figuring out how to convert the code and learn about the machining process. designing fixtures and flipping the block of billet.

I have simplified it by removing un needed machined areas. Rib is needed for the bearing as the return spring sits down there
Ill have to get with them after SEMA everyone is headed there so not many to communicate with for the next 2 weeks.

Yeah going from CAD to CAM the biggest thing to think about is the tool paths, speeds and feeds. During senior design I machined over 100 parts out of 6061 and 7075 and was using a 3-axis CNC. So 90% of them had to have 2-4 separate operations for them to be completed.

More recently I helped a buddy get a 3-axis machine setup from the ground up. He bought a used machine and we got the machine definitions setup and working with the CAM software. He's now manufacturing weapons parts and I helped with build his first AR-15 lower. By far the most complicated part I'd machined. It had 5 or 6 operations to be completed and we had to build jigs for it.

Happy to chat about it further if you want.

Yeah really. I always just assumed you save a CAD file as a parasolid format and import it into the machine like you do with a 3D printer. I just subscribed to this thread.

Lots of differences and similarities between cutting metal vs melting plastic.

i'd like to hear an update as well. now that there are a few itb kit options, would you consider using one of those, or are you in too deep in developing your own?

Currently engine Itb development is on hold.
I've designed this you may have seen it on Facebook. Trying to fund ITB dev with a much needed bearing and fork solution.

This has probably been said, but have you thought about abandoning development of the ITBs and buying a ITB kit from one of the manufacturers that have done the development?
