The focus groups failed them.

This (and many others) is an example of what makes the Twins so great; they're a modern day throw-back, a "gift" from the automotive world to the enthusiast in a time, an era and a future of cars without soul, simplicity and fun. The future of cars, even sports cars, will be driver aids, electronics gizmos, excessive weight, touch screens and self parking back up cameras. The goal of the automotive designer, the automotive innovator is no longer about incorporating the driver but just the opposite; removing the need for the driver altogether.

Unless you're willing to drop $80K plus on a new car, the future of "fun" isn't getting much brighter, and even then...

Upcoming Lexus IS Coupe Rendered

Quote:

A rendered look at what the upcoming Lexus luxury/performance coupe may look like.

It's been several years since Lexus has built a luxury coupe people not over the age of 50 would be interested in buying. Back in the Nineties, the SC was a decent mid-size coupe that offered optional V8 power and competed against the likes of the Acura Legend Coupe and Mercedes-Benz SL. It was on the market until 2000 until it was replaced by an all-new model, now with a retractable hardtop. The V8 became standard but the SC overall was no longer stylish or exciting in any way. It was the ideal old rich man's luxury coupe.

That's now all in the past as Lexus looks to attract a younger generation of buyers, evidence of which can be seen by the new GS and IS rear-drive sport sedans. As we reported last week, the Japanese automaker will also unveil a coupe variant of the IS sedan, likely to be called the RC 350. This new rendering from Theophilus Chin is a very good indicator as to what the new coupe may look like. It'll be powered by the same 3.5-liter V6 in both the GS 350 and IS 350. A high-performance version is also in the pipeline, both of which are due to arrive in the very near future.

To me there is too much 'flat' space in the side view. The front and rear have a lot going on style-wise, but the side just gets the little 'kick up' by the rear wheel, and a rather subtle high character line. It almost needs something between those two features to make it a bit more 'busy' to match the front and rear.

Interior is nice, though.

Coupe rendering looks better mainly because the bottom of the front cover isnt as wavy as the sedan, the split headlights and extreme tailights are still awful though. I don't care for bimmers but a 4 series coupe will look so much classier, i'm hoping the next 2 series coupe is a better looker than the current 1 coupe, it would make a nice replacement with the turbo 4.

i agree with @Dimman side has too much empty space, maybe because it is in white and we cannot see the definition of the crease along the side because being shot in a studio there arent many shadows to pronounce the curves(why do you think pornos are shot in low light lol), i like the rest of the design though the headlights dont really bother me but the rear lights really go againts the flow of the car its like they are bleeding down the side of the car

After looking at these pictures I feel a bit conflicted. On one hand, the busy styling looks quite exotic and high-end to me, but on the other I can't say I like it. Grille is too big (although the hourglass shape makes it more tolerable than say the Hyundai Genesis grille), but I can understand the styling choice. Lights are really busy, but they look expensive and I guess that's good in its own way. Rear light is a bit crazy, but again, it looks expensive to me and that's probably a good thing.

8 speed auto...are they axing manual trans for good?

When I saw the photos I said "fugly!". Then I went to the auto show and saw a black one in person. The front end in 3D in person looks much better down to the headlight treatment. It actually looked pretty good to me. The taillight itself looks good too when lit up. The little streak down the side is less pronounced when looking at the car in person too. Overall I think the design comes across better in person than in photos.

This car is damn near identical to the LF-CC concept.
Plus the Euro plate splitting the front grille makes the front look better.

The headlights bug me because of the wavy indented bulge detail at the bottom of the headlight housing. It suffers the same wierdness that the pre-facelifted XF sedan did with the headlight bulging up from the top of the housing (which was fixed in the facelift, so now the front looks like the original concept)

I think the headlights should have been made more similar to the GS450h hybrid headlights than its somewhat wierd looking swept back looked with odd design curves. LED running strip separation seems fine, just the headlights themselves were misshapen pretty badly IMO. im wondering what the ISF would look like.

i've read in acouple of car magazines and somewhere on the net, that there wont be an ISF variant, and that the IS350F will be the halo car for the IS range
