I don't want any issues with my cat or injectors or anything like that.
No race fuel will not give you better performance if you're not tuned for it. The whole point of the race fuel is the higher octane. Octane is the fuels resistance to igniting and the rate and control at which it burns. Higher the octane, the harder it is to ignite, and the slower it burns. The higher the octane you put in your car (assuming the pcm isnt tuned to take advantage of it) the less power you will make.

Sounds confusing, why would people use race fuel. Certain engines (high compression, forced induction, etc.) require a higher octane fuel to control combustion, and a tune with proper fueling and spark advance to run it.

Example.

Car A Is Turbocharged, makes 400hp on 93 octane with 11.4 air fuel ratio, and 14 degrees of timing.

That is the most power Car A can make on 93 octane because the fuel isnt stable enough to make more power, it will preignite and damage the motor.

Add 110 Octane to car A, lean the air fuel ratio to 12.2, and take the timing to 19 degrees, now car A safely makes 500hp

In order for Race fuel to make more hp in this application, you would have to add advance and lean the mixture in the tune.

besides the lead in it isnt the greatest thing for your oxygen sensors..

Best option is to run what the manufacturer recomends...

Next argument, "my car runs better on 93 even though they say to use 87". Likely you are running it up against the knock sensor, or other engine control, and the additional stability of the higher octane fuel allows the pcm to add more timing and lean the mixture to make more power.

This is basically the computer making the adjustments for you. The computer however can only make minute adjustments.

That was incredibly detailed and informative! Good to know.

In the case of the FRS, the manual states to use Premium Unleaded 93 Octane, which is what I use. So using the higher mixture would not give me better performance correct? I have heard the argument of "manual states to use 87 but I use 93 and my car runs better" but I've also heard of people damaging their cats after a while too.....a buddy of mine had a 1999.5 Jetta (non-turbo) and used 93 despite the manual stating to use 87 and at about 70k miles his cat eroded and it sounded like glass rattling when he drove. lol

I use what the manual states but there was a section saying for "hard driving conditions" a higher octane can be used. I was curious about that.
