"ticking" can be two things: injectors or the valvetrain. Both considered normal noise a Subaru flat engine; they're known for being kinda noisy.

Thanks for the video.
Sounds like an old clonker that's been around the clock and needs new drive belts or a new motor. That's a real shame with your new pride and joy when the engine is its heart and should sound the part, smooth and quiet under the bonnet.

Well, I will keep you posted if it gets worse or not. I got another lucas oil that I could try next tank and see how that goes, or I might make the trip and get the ethanol free gas. Well have fun with your cars.
Which Lucas oil did you use?

It's been quite clearly established that this noise only happens when ethanol is in the fuel. How many posts do you need to see?
No ethanol quiet, E10 or E15 noisy.

So the HPFP isn't happy with ethanol going through it and when it gets hot there's not enough lubrication and it starts to complain. The noise is a result of high friction causing at least one part in the pump to run under extreme conditions it wasn't designed for. How long it can endure those conditions is currently unknown.

My educated opinion but I doubt it's far off the mark.

I used what was mentioned in the post earlier. I used the HI-Performance Upper Cylinder Lubricant and Injector Cleaner. I used one 5oz. with a full tank of gas 91 octane with 10% ethanol, but I am thinking after my next tank I am going to use the 91 that has no ethanol to see what might happen.

You would think that would work when a 1/3 of that quantity of 2T works?

If you can get ethanol free 91 octane that should also work but isn't it supposed to run on 93 octane? Our equivalent here is 98 octane.

Yeah, unfortunately here in Colorado it is 91 and if I go to the race track and I think there is one more place besides the track I can get 93. The track is far from where I live and would be pointless to get it all the time.

Sounds the same as our premium 95 RON.
High octane is 98 RON.

I'm sure running on US 91 is fine as the knock sensors will just retard the ignition timing and the only penalty will be lower power and mpg. It might be hard to pick, hopefully?

In Oz the premium cost above standard is nearly 9% more and nearly 13% on top of standard for the high octane brew it's designed for! It's a shame the ethanol is causing problems because it should be a cheap way to get the high octane needed.
Hopefully they will soon modify the pump to suit this fuel.

I've been using ethanol free fuel since I got the car and it makes the same noise. All the "testing" at this point is speculation at best. It's probably the ethanol making it chirp, and it's possible the gas station I use is lying about their fuel contents, but it's still inconclusive at best. Every other direct-injected car I've come across makes the same noise. My speed3 sure did and that ran for 60k miles on the stock fuel pump with 0 issues. Took it apart when I replaced it with a higher-flowing pump and there was no evidence of increased wear or damage.

But whatever, people will come to their own conclusions based on their own circumstantial evidence. Funny how you don't see any professional mechanics or tuning shops commenting? They know better

You make broad statements that make no sense when compared to the large amount of evidence posted on this forum.

Your conclusion is in the same category.

Why have many pumps already been replaced in attempts to shut the chirping up if it's normal?
Why does a tiny amount of fuel lubricant stop the noise instantly?

Here's a bit more taken from a report carried out by Orbital Eng. in Perth WA

http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosp...assessment.pdf

Potential causes of failure specific to E20 fuel, in order of significance, were found
to be the following:
• Material degradation
• Gumming
• Lubrication deficiency
• Altered combustion
• Fuel properties

But the Title of that report is:

A Technical Assessment of
E10 and E20 Petrol Ethanol Blends Applied to
Non-Automotive Engines.

Last I checked, this is indeed an automotive engine....not saying it doesn't have some relevant points...just sayin
