Test drives, dealership personnel ... my car had 89 miles on it when I got it ... can't imagine there was any adherence to low RPMs

yup, I was kinda excited to end the break-in myself. Don't worry, nobody was within a 1/2 mile of me.

That was my point. I'm agreeing with you.

This is incorrect as it happens. The break in requires that the rings lose metal to the oil in order that they match the cylinder bores exactly. The metal filings end up in the oil filter. It doesn't matter when you do the break in the metal still ends up in the filter. The trouble with waiting to do the break in is the rings may never grind down enough to seal properly.

This is a faily simple process and Subaru tells you exactly what to do in the owners manual. Just do that and your engine will produce the designed power and use little or no oil for 200,000 km or more. Don't follow the instructions and your engine WILL burn oil, eventually.

I wouldn't change the oil until at least 5,000 miles. Used oil analyses have shown that the oil is fine and there is no need to change the oil so early.

Plus the additional moly, zinc, and phosphorus from the factory fill is probably beneficial for a full break-in and will probably be more robust that any oil that you replace it with (unless you switch to a race oil).
