I have always advocated "it is your car do as you please" but when people do as they please and then get pissy when others don't drool over it that is when they place themselves in peril of criticism. Rice is in the eye of the beholder!

Why is everyone acting like this car only has 2 purposes: for show and for street driving?
I drift my FRS with a wide angle steering kit, and I'm currently looking at wide fenders/widebody kits because my tires rub on both the fenders and fender liners on full lock. And in 'track mode', I use wider tires that also rub in the turns. So all you guys who just stand there looking pretty next to your car can complain about how ricey it is, while those of us who actually use our cars will buy these kits without giving a shit what you think.

Yours is the perfect reason to install a kit and even with it on there raw (no paint, exposed rivets, etc) it should never, ever, be called "rice" since it is there for a very specific reason. In fact a kit installed on a tracked car is the very definition of "anti rice" in my books.

It's right in the name: Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement ---> R.I.C.E.
Most widebody kits don't offer much in terms of performance, so to me they're rice. |

I believe that is also due to this being an inexpensive car, some people can't afford to put a good amount of time and effort into molding, and repainting thier car.

This is very, very true. Unfortunately it does not help the image when there are poorly done budget jobs. I totally understand why things may need to be done in stages but when somebody runs out and grabs all the cheap knock off stuff they can, slaps it on without a care and then says "look at my RB car isn't it beautiful" they can cross over into rice territory pretty quick.

Widebody has functional applications. In the 70's my dad raced a widebody Datsun 510. He said he did it so that he could run an 8" wheel (which I assume wouldn't fit standard fenders or would screw up the scrub radius and effective spring rate/damper rate). They also used to run Nissan president take offs for big brakes because BBKs weren't available yet. Wide body might have been needed to use the big brakes and still fit wide wheels.
That said, unless you need 12" wheels with wide tires to get massive amounts of power to the ground, its not really necessary. The 86 can fit 10" wheels in the back with little effort. That's enough for most applications. Overall, I liked them on his 510, but most of the ones I see now are a bit over the top.

They're cool... just hesitant to cut and replace perfectly fine steel panels with inferior FRP material. Always a chance of forming cracks over time but I guess easy to replace. Still prefer ABS plastic, steel, or CFRP.
The Weld FR-S is my favorite because it's welded on steel:

on a side note... "rice" isnt an acronym. that whole "race inspired cosmetic enhancement" bs is some new gen stuff to justify their tackiness.

For the 483rd time. Rice back in the day applied to any and all Japanese cars from your humble 4 door wagon Civic to the 240Z. If it came from Japan it was "rice" period. Rice Rice
