I'm going today to get some Lucas 10003 Upper Cylinder Lubrication & Injector Cleaner 32 oz. Safest solution and its sad we have to take matters into our own hands. Should bill Toyota for this.

Just curious for what the owners/drivers of FRS/BRZ's that are MECHANICS/AUTO ENGINEERS would think/comment on the "self-solution/measures" the rest of us are taking... They should have better knowledge in determining a more "scientific" method/explanation of the issue and narrowing down the solution (just like in medicine).

To those group of owners/drivers who are Mechanics/Auto Engineers - what do you guys think/recommend?

The Lucas upper cylinder lubricant did nothing but anger my crickets. The Lucas semi-synthetic two cycle oil stopped them within one block of the fuel station.

Agreed. Mine went away in a very short distance after putting some Lucas Oil 2-cycle in. I would wonder what the long term effects may be if any.

A bit of skepticism...

Hey there Sybrite and BcBoy..

It was good the Lucas 2-cyln Oil stopped the cricket noise. But don't you guys think that can potentially damage the engine at some point in-time? (as that oil was designed for other types of engine, and not this type).

Also, for how long will the cricket noise disappear with adding the Lucas Oil? I'm leaning on the premise that it's only a temporary fix (just like replacing the fuel pump). (Somewhat similar to giving pain meds without getting to the root cause of the pain...)

Thanks for your comments.. Keep 'em flowing!

I'm certainly no expert on the matter. I did read several forums and pasted a link to another forum a page or two back. There, a guy that seems a lot more educated did some extensive testing (http://www.ls1.com/forums/f48/been-testing-oil-91206/). They found cleaner pistons, 2-5% increase in MPG, and some other stuff if you browse through the forums. Looks like they tested for over 100k miles, or something like that.

I hear that people are adding a couple ounces of the oil to each fill up, so it might be worth trying it on a tank, then run without the oil to see how long before the crickets come back. If they don't come back for a while, then maybe it's best to add it only when the crickets are there. Like many others, I had my fuel pump replaced under warranty, but they came back soon after. Like I said, I'm not a gearhead by any means. I just really hate the crickets. They sound so embarrassing.

Well, I tried the Lucas ucl today. First I added one oz to the quarter tank I had, and the crickets were still there but maybe a bit quieter. I then filled up to fill tank and the crickets were back with a vengeance. I then got home and added another ounce, so now I'm at the recommended 2 ounce per full tank. We'll see tomorrow how it does.

I'm gonna try 1oz of the Supertech 2 strocke TCW3, recommended from someone earlier in this thread, added to a full fillup. If that does little to nothing then I'm gonna try 1.5 oz on the next.
I feel the less we add the better and if 1- 1.5 oz does the job then I'll be satisfied with doing this per tank. I always drive to nearly emtpy anyways so I should get a pretty good mixup if I inject oil first down the gas inlet followed by the full 11-12 gallons of fuel. If non-ethanol wasn't $4.50+/gallon I'd just run that. This is more money efficient. Hopefully.

i know that my the mix im using 100% cured the chirp, it is not noticiable anymore, just has a regular engine noise .

Day 2, and honestly I'm not impressed. At times it does seem the crickets a tad quieter than usual, but they're certainly still there. I'm going to ride out this tank and them try the other oils as suggested.

The noise (as determined by Fuji engineers) is caused by cavitation (bubbles) in the high pressure pump with certain fuel blends in certain conditions. It makes sense to me that adding a lubricant to the fuel can affect the noise, as the oil changes the surface tension of the fuel making it less likely to foam up.

The only potential downside is the additives may reduce the octane rating of the fuel, but 2 oz. per tank is negligible.

I added 2 oz of Shell synthetic 2stroke oil to a full tank of 94 octane fuel (10% ethanol) yesterday and the crickets are gone.

I'm actually very pleased with the results thus far. I'll post up again if they come back.
