When I was in my early 20s I was always the asshole. Fortunately, I learned my lesson. As the customer, starting the conversation with "No need to apologize. I know you don't make the rules." is a huge opener to establishing the relationship, no matter how brief. The service person is instantly relieved and usually ends up going out of her/his way to understand and help.

I've been with the same group helping mostly the same 600 engineers/designers for 10 years now. I get a real kick out of winning over the condescending ones who have no idea with whom they're dealing. The attitude doesn't last long and they end up being my best "students."

It's still rooted in empathy. I used to be the asshole so I have a deep understanding of the attitude. Some days I feel more like a therapist than an engineer.

You're a better man than I. While I used to feel the same way, I don't have nearly as much patience as I once did. That isn't to say I have zero patience or get upset, but if someone wants to be an ass, they're welcome to be an ass. While I do make it a point to be polite in return, I have other things to worry about. (Now that I read that, it isn't to say that you don't, just that... oh never mind, I'm sure you get the point.)

Part of it is rooted in what I call my been-there-done-that syndrome. I have nothing to prove and everything to share.

That sucks. I'm usually lucky enough to have a known starting point when troubleshooting.

Customer interaction on the other hand... Imagine if your customers, vendors, and end users were your company's direct competition. In addition to solving technical problems, most interaction is a game of chess and minesweeper. Grumblegrumblegrumble...

Wow, a lot of heavy stuff. My hot tub ozone generator sprung a leak. I figure, if that is my worst problem today, life is pretty good.

It's a little 2 person, 160 gallon. Only takes about 30 min. to drain and fill with cold tap water. Viola, cold tub.

Dammit. I'm starting to think about lowering. I have absolutely no reason to do it. It's easy to get a jack underneath as it stands now and it's pristine.

Nope nope nope. Not gonna do it. @humfrz, I need a dope slap.

....... snap out of it!

Because:

* the chassis was engineered for that ride height and springs

* so, it's an inch lower, it ain't gonna corner any better

* plus, who in the hell is gonna notice ..... cept the kid up at the mall who sees you awkwardly climb out of it with a grimace on your face and comments ..... "nice ride there old man" ...... as he his eyes

* you think your front lip takes a beating now ...... just wait till you run completely over a parking stop and back up, tearing off the front bumper

* NOW you know where you can't drive because of the clearance issue ...... all that will have to be relearned

* you think mrs ultramaroon complains about its rough ride and getting out of it now .......just wait till it's even rougher riding and lower

* OK, go ahead lower it and see how long your car's rear axils hold up ......

* mrs ultramaroon - "how much are lowering springs including installation..??". Oh really, you're gonna install them yourself ..... while you could have been doing ____________ that I've asked you to do all summer. Well, I guess we CAN afford replacing perfectly good springs on YOUR car ...... but, the new kitchen ________, that I've been wanting is just not in the budget ......

So, there, @Ultramaroon ....... it's your call .......
