Yeah, it was easily the best phone I've owned and my dad is still using his 2 or 3 years on now. If they remade one with even marginally better specs, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. So perfect, was absolutely in love with how the back felt, but the OnePlus One had it beat in hand feel.

Also @krayzie I wish that wireless charging caught on way harder than it did. Though, Dash charging is pretty sweet too.

I've probably mentioned this before but the owner made his fortunes selling giant killer DVD and Bluray players call "Oppo" to videophiles for a tiny fraction of the price compare to some of the big brands. People started ditching their 4 digit priced disc spinners for it.

He's basically trying to do the same thing with OnePlus by loading it with top tier components. Only issue I think is with QC (the factory is just across the Hong Kong border in ghetto Shenzhen) but it's not like there are competing Made in Japan phones lol!

I've had the 1, 2 and now the 3T. Only one that sucked was the 2, but the biggest issue wasn't the phone itself, it was the aftermarket ROM support

I'm not a very big fan of being FORCED into the cloud and handing over all my activities, contacts, and location to Google. I'm mostly a PC guy (cut my teeth on the Commodore 64, and have been "building" desktops since the old 8088/8086 years), using primarily Win7 w/ open source software, but I've got one Linux box I'm dabbling with and a bunch of Raspberry Pi media and audio boxes based on LibreElec/Kodi and Arch/Runeaudio. Recently I bought my wife a new Asus tablet and I figured I'd tinker around with her old Toshiba AT100 Thrive (dual core @800, 1 gig ram, Android 4.0.4). I managed to root it, flash a ROM, gain superuser access, blah blah, and even remove a couple previously untouchable pieces of bloatware. Using mostly apps from F-droid now, but I'm sure there's still a TON of Google-related stuff on there.

My goals? To know the tablet as well as I know my PC. To have it only use local information unless I specifically ask it to do otherwise. To be as google-free as possible.

Any pointers?

Thanks!
Krayzie and Cole pretty much covered it.

See if there is a Debloated/Bare bones ROM and you don't have to install anything Google related if you don't want to (I only have the bare minimum that I need installed on mine).

If there isn't one available, you could always cook up your own. It's not very difficult. XDA has everything spelled out to do so and there's a couple automated tools as well. I made a few for my Nexus back in the day when I had more time. If you can pick up a cheap Nexus to mess around with (check out swappa.com), it'll be a better/easier to learn with instead of the Toshiba.

Since you're already playing around with Linux/Arch it should be fairly simple for you.

Oh, but think of the peace of mind you would get from finally knowing that your blender is transmitting something.

I like how it reads "uses the latest microprocessor circuitry" then at the bottom reads "Battery: 4 x AA 600m/AH NiCd"
