So, after 4 years it looks like my stock battery is starting to die. Seems like a good time to replace it with a lightweight battery. What's a good lightweight battery that can still be used in winter? My FRS is garaged, so temps don't usually drop below 40F in there during the winter. I was considering the Shorai LFX36L3-BS12, but wanted to see if there's a better option.

I was afraid of roasting a $200+ battery with my DD short commute, put in an Odyssey PC680 a few weeks back, may be a bit overkill, but at ~15 lbs it's still 15 lbs lighter than stock and only a little over $100. Been good so far but was going to wait a month or so just to be sure.

I have used this one for the past 2 years LFX24L3-BS12. Survived the Denver winters just fine. Which might not be saying much 'cause it doesn't get super cold here that often. I have a PC680 too (in my BMW), the Shorai requires much less maintenance charging.

I have a Shorai and keep it on a tender any time I'm parked at home. While I don't really drive in the winter, I have done so where the car sits for ~10hrs in a field in the cold, and no troubles starting.

I've never had it fail to start up quickly, but if I'm out on a very short trip (especially if I leave the cameras on while parked) - the battery voltage evidently dips below what the tender likes to see and freaks me out with the "recovery" mode... but it always happily goes to maintenance mode if I go make it happen after a few hours... and when I've forgotten, does so days later too. Battery still handles over-nights and multiple days off the tender (including a road-trip where I went at least 60 hrs without driving the car).

I'm sure some day it will decide "ENOUGH!" and leave me stranded somewhere, but that's true of most batteries.

I never put mine on a tender unless I'm gone for over a week. I've even let the car sit for a week and the Shorai still cranks it right over. It died on me once, but I think I left an interior light on or door didn't shut all the way. Otherwise it has been maintenance free.

Dang, I'm just as confused now as I was before. I drive my car pretty much every day, so I think the Shorai will be ok. And since my car is garaged at home and work, I don't think the temps will be an issue this winter. If Colorado temps don't present an problem, I doubt Nashville temps will.

I was actually able to recharge my OEM battery by adding distilled water to the cells. Didn't even know you could do that before. The slow starts have gone away for now. Will probably get a Shorai battery next spring for weight savings though.

I regret my decision now
Oh well, saved $100 in the near term and can play with mounting options with the shorai in mind for the future.

I’ve been running a Battery Tender battery this whole season, largest size available (5.x lbs battery and mount combined). I’ll throw it on the charger if the car sits for 3-4+ days, but other than that I’ve been DDing it everyday. Sat at Nats throughout the week after the Pro Finale and started up with no issues.

So... shit being what it is...

Is the fancy factory BBK on the BRZ PP worth anything at all if I have the AP Sprint off the old car? Obviously the wheels and shocks aren't of particular value to me at this point since almost everything I already have is also going to move to the new chassis. Header (Nameless) is probably not worth the risk given impact was right in the middle front and it definitely was pushed into the dipstick (can't tell yet if it hit the pulleys at all), and the GS intake box is a bit crushed...

Pondering what else is worth doing differently the second time around as well.

I'd assume the AP sprint BBK is a good bit lighter than the OEM Brembos, so there's that.

EDIT: And sorry to hear about the car.

There was a thread/reply on the forums here somewhere, that covered the Sprint kit benefits over the new PP Brembos.

I can't seem to find it atm, but basically the AP Sprint kit is a much better setup.
