Hahaha ok that was a bit extreme.

The interior of the S3 is really what's going to kill the STi, most people shopping $40k cars aren't 20 yr olds and will probably want something a little nicer that what Subaru is offering.

I know I'd be buying the S3... well actually I'd be buying an M235 but that's a whole other thread.

Thanks to the posters who knew what I was more or less saying. Of course, no instrumented testing or reviews are available yet for the S3 so I'm just going off of the car's specifications. We'll have a better idea when that stuff is out. However, having said that this is what I think we'll find:

S3 advantages:
-acceleration
-interior fit and finish
-standard amenities
-fuel efficiency
-initial cost of ownership (all service included for 4 yrs)

STI advantages
-handling
-braking

Someone remarked that the S3 is overpriced. I actually think it's fairly reasonable for what you get

I think the their argument about the s3 pricing is actually getting an s3 at base price. Dealers will normally add on options etc, but if you can get an s3 at base price. I agree that it is a great car for the money.

That is until the golf R gets here :p

I would be a bit surprised if it accelerated faster than the STI, considering the STI is on par with the S4 already, 0-60, according to actual tests and not Subaru's data. I don't think Audi wants lower models cannibalizing sales above them.

I'm worried that the new R will be more expensive than the S3. It's likely to be an even more niche model. 'Course what I really want is that Golf R Wagon that's been seen testing at the Ring. It would be a fitting replacement to the wife's Golf Wagon TDi (JSW in the US) and my old WRX 5-door.

If they price the Golf R over the S3, I don't think it'll sell well at all. Remember the Phaeton?

Sadly, yes. I remember the Phaeton. But the R was never meant to sell in big numbers. They only sold about 5500 of the last generation in the US and 750 in Canada.

The S3 will start at $44K in Canada and the last gen R was $40K, so it's going to be close!

This new Audi S3 for the US might have the same dumb down engine found in the new VW Golf R for the US. Piston ringlands vs. carbon build up. Pick you poison.

The S3 has a better power to weight ratio than the S4, so I don't see how that proves anything.

Only complete idiots actually compare anything to a vw/audi..... I would rather take a kia rio over any audi/vw because then I wouldn't be the idiot who bought a shitty car for wayyyy too much money that can't actually afford the 10k a year in broken parts that you will realize only after you overpaid for a service contract that actually doesn't cover anything but fluid changes.

I don't care if the Audi was 10k and the STi 40k... I would still come out ahead money wise after 5 years and stress free from no wiring headaches, and alive because my car didn't just drive itself off a mountain road thinking it could handle some gravel when it can't.

Oh I feel so much better after some good ol' audi/vw bashing... Thanks bud

Think about this; the market targeted for the STi is a group of enthusiests with money to put down on a 40k heavily sports oriented car. The S3 market is for those who want a plush semi sporty MVI 7 four door hatchback.

Yes the STi is way overpriced when the new WRX will be a better platform for upgrades. You could also take an S3 over to APR and switch out the turbo and do a stage 2 map and make 350-400 whp. In terms of reliability, the STi will cost an arm and a leg less than the audi when its time to get serviced, and cheaper replacement parts.

The people who buy the S3 want a cushy ride with a bit of goose behind the gas pedal. The people who buy the STi want a road legal rally racer (even though 99% of those kids dont use it off road at all).
