This car is a relative bargain. That's why there may be people willing to buy a turbo kit and still able to cover the costs of repairing anything that breaks. I mean, if you were shopping for a 335i and then bought an FR-S instead, you have a lot of spare automotive budget to play with.
Also, someone who is going to turbo the car was probably going to void the warranty anyway. -Justin

On some tech chat, the FA20DIT producing 300hp factory rated. Has gone through vigorous testing and compliance. Seems to say that only a few and very small design modifications are needed to ensure a reliable FA20 N/A-Turbo.
From aftermarket tuner aspect, they arn't paid or have the time and resources to do some of the major testing big manufacturer do when building a car. Nor is their target, to provide OEM quality performance parts. Its just not that simple. If there was an aftermarket shop that wants to build a very reliable FA20 Turbo, that also ensures better economy, mileage, longevity, reliability, in addition to performance. It would be wise to take a detailed look at how the FA20DIT is doing and use that as a road map in designing a better system for the FA20. However all the turbo kits available today are ultimately geared to provide better performance because thats what the market really demands.

It's so early in the FI game it's hard to tell at what point we should be adding low compression pistons and such. All we really know are the limits of the fuel system. It's pretty impressive that all the tuners have run into the fuel wall at around 300whp before blowing anything up on the stock motor.

Only time will tell.
But I'll try my best to make sure these motors stay together. |

As you pointed out Suby ditched the d4s for their own injection system. We don't really know what other changes they made.

i made a thread of the changes the FA20DIT has vs FA20. Including lower compression pistons and watercooled EGR.

like most people have said, might as well kiss reliability goodbye when you start modding. cars are designed by engineers for certain tolerances; once you change variables in the design, you open yourself up to weaknesses is the design.
that being said, give it a year and you will start to see how reliable in a real-world acceptable sense these boost builds end up being. |

The BRZ isn't the first NA car that has been boosted. I hate to compare apples to oranges but look at hondas and pretty much every other modded import. They're all running 6-9 psi safely. Yes none of them are running nearly as high of compression but who knows.
Personally 9psi with e85 on a GTX30 sounds like a party to me. |

The BRZ isnt the first NA Subaru to be boosted, there have been companies offering supercharger kits for them since 2008, for most models. No problems if you dont exceed 9psi on all the EJ series SOHC's

I think it's also fair to say that, in general, the higher the boost - the more likely it is to have reliability problems. Boost at 3 psi = hardly any hit to reliability. Boost at 10 psi on stock internals = live fast, die young.
