Alaska? Sweet. Anchorage, Alaska is my home town. Get the newer model. The 13 may have some rust issues if it has spent it's entire life in Alaska. As we both know ... the winters there are brutal.
Great car for auto-X in the summer. Use your Subie in the winter.

I just bought a '13 and was in the same predicament. They way I look at is with the one I bought, I have almost two years of the Toyota warranty remaining. That's plenty of time to get any issues out (just had my fuel pump replaced a couple days ago for chirping) and I'll be adding quite a few parts that will make getting warranty warm difficult. The money you're saving can be put towards FI, coilovers, wheels, etc. just a thought. I purchased a 2013 with 21k mi for $15.8 a month ago.

Bought my 2013 brand new, had 4 miles on it. It was just so rewarding to save up the money and by my own, brand new car, that no one else had driven (except the delivery truck driver). That may sound silly, but was easily worth a few thousand dollars to me. Never had a single issue with mine, except one speeding ticket.
Either is a good buy, but there is something about brand new and peeling the plastic off! |

Buy the brand new 2017 86 and call it a day.
IMHO the BRZ 2017 has a better looking front bumper! ![]() |

I went from a 13 FR-S to an 86. It's a "nicer" car than the 13, but no different fundamentally. The 86 is quieter, a bit smoother and a bit more refined feeling.
If that's good or bad is up to you. |

I picked up a low mile '13 a few months back. As a rule of thumb 3 year old cars are usually in the sweet spot between newness and depreciation. Add to that the 86 is still fundamentally the same car.

I have a 13, never had any issue. currently at 60k.
If you're going to mod the car, buy a used one. that leave you alot of cash for mod Dont buy a 2017 and start replacing parts because everything is still "new". i know i would find it hard to do so. and jesus, the front bumper is not very appealing on the 2017. |

To me the choice is obvious: get the 2013 BRZ assuming it checks out (very good idea to pay for an independent mechanic (preferably one familiar with Subarus) to check out the car unless you are very experienced - think of it as cheap insurance).
You can probably negotiate a lower price - 18K is too high here - local markets vary... As others mention there is little driving difference - and this will put you closer to your goal of the Corvette. Depreciation is not your friend... Finally your first new car is a mixed blessing... that first scratch, paint chip, door ding, windshield chip is a killer! |
