I got 2 track days out of my RE-71R before they were at the wear bars and heat cycled out. I replaced it with Nitto NT01 since I'm more into HPDE than Auto X but I've got them on a different set of wheels than what I daily on.

I use RS3 for the track, and have had a set last 8 events, it is a cheap, grippy and DD usable tire, and I would continue using them, but once my car is back I'm gonna be upgrading to Hankook TD and see how it goes.

Telling someone what type of tire to use in an HPDE scenario is like telling them what type of woman/man they should be attracted to.

Go out and try different ones, that's most of the fun right there!

Aren't you supposed to get to know a tire brand and then commit to spending the rest of your life with that one choice

Maybe, I've met many racers who would marry a set of Hoosiers if it was legal.

Nothing wrong with suggesting a first date if you know a hot choice...

Same thing with brake pads... although I do love my ST43s

So I ordered Direzza star spec 2 in 215/45/17 for my CE28N 17x8. I had original star specs on my V7 STI and they were very good.

Bumping this to get opinions on HPDE tires for the intermediate group. I'm on stock suspension. Love the AD08R (used on my Supra for some track days) and want to get another set in 215/45/17 but fear it might overpower the stock suspension with its grip.

Thoughts? I may throw on some RCE yellows before the season starts but don't plan on changing the shocks.

TireRack still has a killer deal on the last sets of Hankook R-S3s. Like, fire sale pricing. I tried them out for the first time last weekend in 245/40/17 and they were solid. Not as precise-feeling as my Z2SS, and they didn't like slip angle as much as my VR-1s, but for the price, I can definitely recommend.

Edit: and a guy I know sets blazing-fast lap times on stock suspension with 215 Z2SS. So I can recommend those as well.

+1 on stock size ZIISS w/ stock suspension, had a blast at the track with them and they performed excellently, even managed to get 20k street miles out of them, but they were well past the wear bars. Put camber plates on the front and I think that's the most balanced I've ever had the car.

I was going to try RS3 next, but decided to focus on autox so MPSS are my current street tire that may see track time. Don't know how they compare to AD08's, but I'd be surprised if any 200TW street tire in OE size was 'too much' for the OE suspension.

And it's always nice to not have to swap tires before/after a hard day of driving.
