Ouch. I've never thrown a car one around (I wouldn't want to replace what used to be $100 bulbs just because I'm being careless) but damn that would suck. I'm not sure what auto ones are pressurized to but I'm sure they could explode :P Now I'll be wondering next time I move them around, thanks!

I can tell by looking at your avatar. To be honest, it was freaking scary at first, but I get used to it now.

I doubt the car ones could kill you, but they would probably mess your hands up pretty bad. Plus they are probably built with thicker glass to help resist damage from vibration as the car is moving so they would be less likely to explode. Still wouldn't want to touch them without at least work gloves though, you don't want to touch them with your bare hands anyways, the oils from your fingers also shortens lamp life. Same goes for halogens, the quartz envelope can develop micro-fractures from the chemical reaction of the oil from your hands and the heat of the lamp, causing the lamp to be more likely to fail. I always wear latex gloves when replacing my headlamps.

Seriously? I mean really?

I'll just assume you aren't serious and go on my way.

Yep, never touch them. I've used denatured alcohol to clean them before but I also always wear latex gloves to handle HID bulbs and halogens.

I saw the usually

I'm not sure about all the re-striking procedures for entertainment lighting, but for automotive it's a non issue. I've been running a D2S retrofit in my car for the last 7 years and the bulbs are still running strong, and I also bought them used like Dave.

I think it's called "you're posting this retarded shit in the wrong thread", but there may be a more technical term for it, I'm not sure.

The ones we usually get come with their own wet-nap to clean them with after installation. I guess when you're purchasing a $400 lamp, a $0.50 wet-nap is a cheap convenience.

This is one of the larger lamps we have in our inventory at the theatre where I work.

Definitely not the biggest I've seen though. The Science museum in Boston has the 15,000 watt lamp from their IMAX projector on display...now that thing is a beast. I've heard they cost something like $5,000 to replace or more per lamp. The are crazy expensive.
