The SunLEDs that @cjd linked are also either rated at either 30mA or 70mA.

What's the trick to pulling solder off the posts?

Meh, as long as you get the idea the way you get there doesn't really matter. Just need to forward bias the diode through an ammeter, preferably a digital one.

You should check forward bias voltage before you disconnect any of them. Fire it up and measure the voltage across 1 and 2.

...and a hot soldering iron.

I suggest the chemtronics 80-3-5. Fluxed is better for wicking. Chemtronics is good stuff.

Hand operated solder suckers suck ass. Electric ones are better than wick but they're $$$.

Voltage was 2.9 when hooked directly to the battery on my FRS. I don't have access to a solder sucker. How did they do it before those existed?

I got it off by jumping back and forth while applying pressure

Oh, I've been at this since the early 80s. The nicest tools are more reasonably priced but not much else has changed. Just get some of that solder wick. Tech Spray also makes good wick. Some brands are more generously rosined than others.

Also, those components are cheap enough that you might consider getting a few different ones and test them for suitability. At least get extras for when you fuck up.

Ok, so get diodes that forward bias at 3 Volts.

I disconected 1 and 3 and went to check amperage. I didn't get a reading and the lights wouldn't illuminate. I switched it to voltage and they read 4.88 and just barely lit up. What gives?

Yes, I've been in the field for only 2 years. But wtf, the questions I get asked revolve around basic hardware and software issues, which is much less complex than what I do on a daily grind.

When I reply, I get dismissed like I don't know what I'm talking about. Frustrating when its family and I'm the only computer dude around thats willing to help for free...

Man, that sucks :/ Dunno what the job entailed but sounded really good...
Hey Phijkchu, I know you want to build your own computer but I'll just use your money to buy a shitty prebuilt.

did you connect one of the test leads to either 1 or 3, and the other test lead to one of the pads on the PCB? Make sure you are set to measure current.
