So, mods last season were non-existent. This year I'll have: coilovers, wider wheels/tires, lower control arms, subframe bushings, differential bushings, shifter bushings, Perrin steering lockdown kit, short shifter, and possibly a full exhaust minus the header.

What class would I be in? I'm not competitive with anyone but myself, so I don't care if they put me in the open cockpit class. :P
You would find your best sucess in novice stx with that setup. I think it will be fun to do autox here where it's not 120 degrees so I am deffinitly looking forward to this season of autox and track days.

STX, perfect!

Yeah, did I see that you came from Arizona? Where at?

My girlfriend and I are looking to move out there. I come from Southern California, so getting back in to some desert heat is ideal for me. I wanna drive my BRZ year round.

I lived in the west valley in Peoria. It's a nice place with less traffic and noise than other areas but it's still close to everything. I know a very good agent down there as I am in real estate myself how could help you find a place.

That'd be awesome!, but I don't know for sure that we'll be moving there. She works for the .gov so it's basically wherever she can find/get a job at this point. I'm being picky and told her no where more East or North of where we currently are. Arizona is just high at both of our lists.

I'd avoid BC/Megan like plague. They will handle worse than stock and be very inconsistent in terms of damping rates. If you only care about looks - it's fine. If you want decent control, you're better off with stock. Buy at least entry-level quality stuff (KW/RCE etc), or stay stock.

I have the Unichip, front and rear strut bars, Greddy CAI, single 2.5" exhaust, BPS short shifter, MTEC shift springs and a Perrin lightweight crank pulley. I'm also going to have a lightweight battery come spring.
I don't know what class that puts me in, but I just want to do it for fun!

Everything sounds STX legal except the strut bars. Those will put you into CSP

Yes it is.

Also what is the difference between STX and CSP?

If you're gonna be running just for fun, it won't matter. You'll be hopelessly under-prepared for either class. I'd look at participation and see which class you'd have more people to run with so that you have some benchmark.

In STX you'd probably be a set of proper wheels/tires away from being in the running for an occasional trophy, locally.

I don't think CSP has been well-attended locally in recent years. A couple of well-prepared NB Miatas, might change this year, time will tell.

STX to CSP is a fairly big leap in terms of total allowance. It's much more difficult to show up in a mainly streeted car in SP and compete well if national/divisional prepped cars are there. The biggest leap is SP allows R-compound tires like Hoosier A6, or BFG R1S etc... whereas STX you are limited to 140TW tires... hankook RS-3, BFG Rival, Dunlop Z2 etc... so there is a significant increase in commitment there needing to show up with autocross specific wheels and tires which you won't be able to drive to and from the event on (I mean you can... but you shouldn't want to)

Modification wise, stepping to SP you also no longer have to retain the emissions components, you can remove stereo components, delete the factory A/C, you can also update/backdate drivetrains to other years (IE: A 2002 WRX with a 2007 WRX motor and trans), turbo cars also can modify boost levels.

The reason strut bars are not allowed in STX is because STX does not allow for chassis/structural bracing in general.

There is also a big difference in which cars are competitive in each class... STX is pretty wide open, BRZ/FR-S, RX-8, E36 BMWs are all competitive among potentially others. CSP is basically "spec-miata".

In case anyone was interested in my VERY thorough initial inspection of the Function7 Lower Control Arms, there ya go.

Also, @dsgerbc , thanks for the input but you're about a week too late to sway me in any direction. Accurate runs them on his car and likes them, so I went for them. The guys with different manufacturer cars (Honda, Volkswagen, Ford even) seem to enjoy their Megan's, so I'll give them a shot too.

It really depends on the whole setup how much camber and what you plan on doing. On the track Megan are great. The cheaper coils do not like to be shocked. If you hit a bump in a corner or do not have smooth steering inputs they will cut loose easier than a more expensive option. I track my car more than autox so I am not jerking the wheel as much and the car stays nice and level in all the corners. Also with a cheaper coils you need to follow the instructions very closely to maintain a consistent damper rate. In reality they are not going to last as long and they are only rated to 20,000 miles so you will have to replace them more often. I do think a lot of options are over priced for what they offer as I have been in twins with a lot of different setups and the difference is not all that drastic like the marketing of the more expensive options would like you to think.

Problem is, do you REALLY KNOW what you are getting on ANY of the products? Specific material grades, damper fluid type/additives, valving style, how the company determines their force curves, how exact are their tolerances, how the bulk parts are assembled, what their quality check process is.

There are products wildly over-priced because they can be and are well marketed, then there are others which are better deals... In the end though... it's best to use the expectation that if they are cheap, you are getting what you pay for, and if they are expensive, they better have a damn good customer service department.
