So, I just found a TSB (T-SB-0154-18) dated December 10, 2018 related to this problem...
If you go into the "Manufacturer Communications" section and expand the Engine listing dated Dec 10, 2018 (on page 1 as of this writing), you'll see the details.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2017/T...Communications

Direct link to PDF file:

Update: Canadian Toyota TSB # is TCI-5183 for Toyota. Subaru Canada's is SB.07.70.18 (got from friend that works at Subaru). I don't have Subaru USA's. No luck online for that but if someone in the US could post it, that'd be awesome.

That TSB is in the TSB thread, the full version of the original subaru doc and the "cleaned up" version from Mitchell ProDemand.

I'm just waiting for Toyota to post their version, so I can have them deal with my car, because toyota dealer techs in this case, are useless without a TSB telling them EXACTLY what to do.

Looks like I'm going to have to take mine in now. It through the codes again this evening on the way home this evening. Three times in less than a week.

I'm going to check with my QC folks at the plant Monday to see if I can get a contact at HQ to see if I can find which will be the best dealer in my area to take the car. I'm rather concerned about them pulling the engine and doing the valve adjustment. The just don't see that many of these cars around here.

I'm really glad to see the post where I could get the TSB. I'm printing that out and taking it with me when I take the car in.

so if you guys remember my posts from last year about my 2017 brand new brz cel after 1 day of driving.

dealer replaced my ecu, fuel injector last year. then the car sits in the garage during the winter. this week i took the brz out. let it idle abit on the driveway. boom, lights on again. i don't bother reading the codes again. cuz everytime it's the same effing codes. it ruins my fun to starr at the engine light on a new brz... i am sure everyone on this thread has the same depression, it sucks that because of this, i like driving the rav4 better in the winter time, at least the rav4 has no engine light on randomly giving me an heart attack

finally they have some tsb for this. i originally suspected it's only the 6-speed. and it seems align with this tsb. anyway. the screenshot of the subaru tsb says only ecm firm flash? no valve shimming?

The full tsb is in the pinned thread. Procedure is to check valve lash and correct if out of spec before reflashing

TSB gives 3.2 hours for valve clearance inspection without adjustment and 2.8 hours for engine R&R on a manual car. I don't think removing the valve covers, checking 16 valves, cleaning and resealing the engine is a 24 minute job, so it's probably 3.2 hours to measure it in place and every minute of that is a pain in the butt.

Also, engine R&R on an automatic allows for more time than measurement only.

just called the subaru dealership markham ontario canada. the service advisor says no such tsb from subaru. i don't think he tried to look up. he probably pulled up my brz profile on the computer and don't see any tsb alert associated with it.

didn't have the screenshot with me at the time.

My car is still with the dealer after 22 days. They dropped the motor, did the valve shimming, put it back together, and put it back in the car. Should be getting it back Monday. No ECM programming/flashing done though. They said this was the first one they've had for this issue.

A bulletin isn’t a recall. It won’t be flagged on your VIN. You go through the normal diagnostic procedure, if the car has a fault as described in a bulletin you follow the bulletin to perform the repair.

Bulletins are just guidance toward a known solution. Guidance that the tech is required to follow for warranty purposes.

The vast majority of people can’t pull their own codes, don’t know what a bulletin is, and don’t spend any time on forums. The car comes in with a check engine light, that’s it. You telling them the code and how they’re going to fix it doesn’t get you anywhere.

Just got my car back. The engine note has a noticeably more "rattle in a tin can" type sound to it now but no lights, no misfires, seems to drive ok so I'll take it.
