Could preview a production model

Toyota will reportedly unveil a new FR concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

According to Motoring, the concept will preview a sporty coupe which will slot below the Toyota 86. Little else is known about the car but it will reportedly be a front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle that weighs less than 980 kg (2,160 lbs).

The car is reportedly being developed with the assistance of four-time World Rally Championship winner Tommi Makinen and is rumored to use a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops approximately 130 PS (128 bhp / 96 kW).

If everything pans out, the model will go on sale in early 2017.

No way it will be 2+2. But it looks like it will be a Toyota rebadged MX-5 coupe. This makes, sense, as I think GT86 will get out of production and will not have any successor. But what about new Supra?

I chose drop-top roadster to directly compete with the MX-5. Nissan already stated that they are building the IDX (or will be designing a car, could be the IDX but who knows) to directly compete with the 86. If toyota is going to build another car that's below the twins in their line up i believe a even smaller, roadster would be the best choice. Toyota already has hatches, and with the scion TC being a "hatch" and the new iA or iM (i can't remember) they don't need a hatch. Also, why create another 2 door coupe when you have the 86? Unless you build the next gen 86.

Sorry to say but Nissan killed the IDX.

They're keeping some styling elements from the car, but chances are whatever is left of it will be YAFWDHH (yet another front wheel drive hot hatch).

I would be very happy if Toyota brought a RWD Hot Hatchlike the Toyota Aygo FR to North America, but the project to do that morphed or was rolled into the current 86.

Man would that car be fun cheap and practical!

I am not sure why people are so caught up on RWD. Ford proved you can make a FWD rotate nicely with the FIST. More options are always better. Simple, fun and light weight cars are going away even in the economy boxes.

Because rear wheel drive is better to drive, and it is becoming just as easy to drive year round with the new winter/snow tires. FWD is settling for something because it is cheaper.

Yea, they did so good with the Fiesta ST it scares the crap out of normal people who are not use to front wheel drive cars "rotating." So they sell them. Same as with the Focus ST. Oh wait, same as with the FRS/BRZ. People just don't want cars that can actually handle well any more. They want fat pigs that come with every option and understeer massively so the novice driver doesn't wet their pants.

Oh why, Why?
I didn't take you as a wheeldrivest. RWD has always been easy to drive year round and many generations did it without even questioning it. This whole modern RWD elitist thought process eludes me every time it comes up.
There are many FWD cars that perform very well. I know it is unheard of on here but being able to rotate is not the be all and end all of every car for every driver.
Historically speaking the masses have never wanted car that "handles well" but cars that were comfortable and easy to drive while they went about their day to day lives. The enthusiast that wants great handling, mega speed or radical appearance are a mere fly speck in the automotive world. Always have been and always will be. To these people FWD is perfectly suitable and there is nothing wrong with that.

I don't see how one can advocate for more options and FWD at the same time. RWD is the exception to the rule. If you want more options, you don't get it telling people to just buy FWD.

Besides, most serious drivers get over unequal length drive-shafts, 65% front weight bias, and excess tire and CV joint wear once they get out of their teens. No thanks. Obviously the people who don't care about that stuff can buy the myriad of FWD choices out there already.

WHATAFK that's an ugly white car haha. Rear is fugly. if only it was roomier coupe or 2+2 even if back seats are for dogs. Round tail lights=yuck!

More FWD options? You kidding? In Europe we ONLY have FWD options. RWD is the exception. You get that in big heavy luxury cars such as BMW and Mercedes. The Twins and MX-5 are the only two cars we can choose from. Don't bring up new Twins/MX-5 vs. used Cayman.
