I got a speeding ticket in Arizona in a rental car (2012 Eclipse ) while driving back from Vegas in the open desert. The speed limit had just dropped to 60mph from 70mph and I was doing just a smidge over 80mph. I came right up on the cop's butt before I realized it was a State Trooper and I was nailed.

Anyway, the point to my story is that I was polite and apologetic so the cop only wrote me a ticket for 79mph in the 60mph zone and since it was less than 20 over the limit, he was able to recommend that I only had to take an online driver course and pay a fine to have the ticket removed from my record. This practice can vary wildly from state to state but I don't think this would remotely apply in the OP's case since he was ticketed for more than double the limit.

Since he didn't get a reckless driving complaint, I don't think a lawyer is going to help with anything more than lighten the OP's wallet.

@OP, if you have the disposable income, then yes, get the lawyer. If not, take my earlier advice.

Make no mistake, the state doesn't give a shit about safety, this is about revenue, so never try to get out of paying when you are in the wrong. You may be able to take a driver safety course, and get out of it, but I'd save that for a worse violation.

To everyone whining about the speed he was going, please sell your cars, you've all done something irresponsible while driving or you wouldn't want a sports car. Not saying it's ok, per se, but there are some 40mph zones around here in the middle of nowhere and I've probably done faster than 85. I'm not sure what the OPs situation was, but if it was in a high-traffic, or densely populated area, then I would say to slow it down, obviously. Though I'm not sure, and wouldn't trust what internet speeder guy says anyway.
I don't think most sports car buyer purchase their cars because they want to drive irresponsibly. I would guess only a few buy them because they are borderline sociopaths who evade responsibility whenever possible. They buy them because they want a car that gives them a more engaged driving experience and rewards skill. I think it is SUV drivers that are least responsible. They want a vehicle that provides them and their families a big cushion of safety and mass so that they can prattle on the phone, drink and eat and generally pay minimum attention to driving.

HAHA! So true!

If I was a Marketing Director for a car company my sales pitch for our line of SUVs would be something like this...

"Come experience our new line of SUVs! They're cars, for people who hate cars!"

***BTW, I get a nickel every time one of you uses that!

I disagree, because driving a sports car spiritedly, is the entire point of owning one. Now don't confuse what I'm saying with "sports car owners are all irresponsible, micro-penis having, maniacs that take every corner at the limit, and give no fucks for bystanders of any age". That's not what I'm implying. However, if you prefer driving a sports car, and you've never broken a traffic law, you are either a liar, or the most boring person in the world.

ok just being funny here but....

The dealer I got my FRS from has sold all their FRS's to 50 plus year olds who say they plan to baby it. Which i believe because lets be honest.

I was the youngest (23) they sold the FRS to.

For example they had a red FRS modded (lowered, intake, exhaust, heated leather seats, Five Axis spoiler and rims) and the guy who bought it was 55 and said he planned to baby it totally. To me thats almost a waste. A lot of mid life crisises happening here in WI i guess lol

Bahaha - I've certainly exceeded speed limits [never in excess like the OP though!] and had my share of clipping past yellow lights just as they turn red, but for the most part I drive defensively and have never received a ticket or been in an accident.

That being said, this car [or I guess any sports car!] really does empower you and I've found myself having a bit of fun at night [I work midnights so no traffic on the road] when I can open it up a bit and rev quickly through the gears/coast at or slightly above the speed limit. Fun feeling, but I think the worry of ever being in an accident or even being pulled over keeps me in check.

Mayhaps that makes me boring but I like the clean record >.>

you are erroneously conflating "spiritedly" with "irresponsible". Spirit is exactly what I was referring to. That is, driving as if it matters - taking driving opportunities where they exist and enjoying the experience overall. The brilliance of the FR-Z is that, as Clarkson notes, it offers a sports car approaching-the-limits experience at relatively low speeds. I don't think ritual flouting of the laws is necessary to the equation. That has more to do with getting your kicks from law breaking than driving.

Even those boring, middle-aged, Viagra-inhaling, garage-queeners, took the highway ramp they test drove it on, above recommended speeds, or if they were like myself, and can only enjoy test drives when there is abject terror in the eyes of the salesman, sideways.

I think we agree more than the posts would imply, and feel we are approaching the area of semantics at this point.

You've got dibs I suppose. I'm actually mostly boring, my average MPG is sitting around the 27 mark. Though I've certainly put it through the paces on back roads and what have you. Which for anyone unaware, was probably illegal.
