Are you simply bending out the spaces where the plastic rivets go through the plastic piece? I'm having a hard time visualizing what the *fix* is. I pulled the plastic rivets out of the plastic piece and attempted to use a conical punch to bend each space between the weld points. There is, for lack of a better word, a 'metal envelope' between each spot weld and the next. This is what I attempted to 'open up' a little more.

This didn't really fix anything for me. Perhaps someone can clue me in on this one.

I've decided to bite the bullet and be the guinea pig that gets some of our issues front-and-center on the Scion end. Next week, I'll be taking in my FR-S to have the dealer look at the following issues:

1. Air conditioning chirp every 15-20 seconds while car is in motion.
2. DRL Customization (using TSB #S-SB-0009-12 for a new ECU to turn off the Daytime Running Lights)
3. Rear deck tapping (using TAS #122230369 for the repair)
4. Buzz in passenger door when speaker plays music with any bass

I will definitely update everyone with the dealer results.

I'm in Vancouver, Washington, so it will be interesting to see what kind of service the Pacific Northwest offers.

It's hard to tell the location you're describing. But when you talk about the plastic rivets on the plastic piece, it makes me think like you're talking about the front of the deck right behind the rear seats. I believe the noise is from the metal panel right below the 3rd brake light rubbing against the body. When you stick your head in the trunk from outside and look above, you will be able to see both the metal panel and the body.

NOTE: This is only my guess from reading multiple people describing the fixes that were done to their cars (Only one in U.S.). So, I'm not 100% sure if I'm correct.

Someone posted a thread today saying the new ECUs for this fix are screwing up the the recognition of the car's keys. Best to wait on this until the issue is fixed.

I saw that. I just received an update call from McCords Toyota here in Vancouver. The Regional Manager will be on-site - he wants to hear the noises himself - so I will verify with them that the ECU swap won't end up neutering my car.

The appointment's on for next Tuesday (August 28), so I should have new information for all of us very soon.

Curious to see what my loaner car will be. Scooby owners seem to be getting Outbacks and Foresters and complaining about it; anything's more interesting than the rest of Toyota's line-up. I just know I'm gonna end up in a freakin' Sienna.

Yet another quick update (tired of hearing from me yet?): the email form I submitted yesterday to Scion (http://www.scion.com/contact/) yielded a phone call from Scion Headquarters. I wasn't able to answer the phone, but in the voicemail, I now have a case number and service manager at Scion central (in addition to the appointment I have with my dealership and the Regional Manager on Tuesday).

Everyone who has a problem with their FR-S or BRZ needs to fill out the online form. Obviously, Scion is not like car manufacturers I've bought from in the past - they actually read and, more importantly, respond to emails submitted on their website.

Once again, that link for Scion is: http://www.scion.com/contact/ and for Scooby: https://www.subaru.com/shopping-tools/contact-us.html.

Do it. Five minutes may result in significantly less headache in your car.

I've added my comments in on Subaru.com using the links in this thread.

Anyone else, please feel free to use what I submitted in your comments to Subaru/Toyota/Scion, if it helps you find the time to enter your comments!

Quote:
I have encountered an issue shared by a number of Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ owners, and the fix for the issue has been identified by Scion/Toyota service centers.

My car makes a metallic tapping noise frequently while in motion.
Description of the noise:
- Noise comes from rear that sounds like clicking/tapping.
- With the rear seats down, the noise becomes sharper that sounds more like popping/ticking.
- It happens regardless of the vehicle speed.
- It happens even on a smooth road.

I have ruled out many other reasons for this tapping sound and believe I have narrowed it down to this issue recognized at Japanese dealerships already:
"Below the 3rd brake light mount, there is a panel that is welded on to the body. Some cars don't have enough weld and the panel rubs against the body causing the noise."

In Toyota reference material, this fix was known as TAS# 122230369. I would appreciate it if Subaru would share information with Toyota/Scion in this matter to devise a warrantied fix for the issue. Thank you.
Thanks to @Sigh-on-Rice for the concise descriptions.

The buzzing noise you mentioned in your title might be the different issue.
There is a quick fix for that issue that you might want to try.

As for the popping/ticking noise of the rear deck, there is no quick fix or DIY fix that I know of.
You might be able to have your dealer fix it by referencing TAS# 122230369.

I don't know from what point it's considered constant or random, but mine is anywhere from once every 5 minutes to 10 times in 30 seconds. I don't see any pattern of when and how it happens more often or more rarely. During my 30 minutes commute (12.5 miles), it makes the noise about 40 times.

I have the repair done (only one in US to my knowledge) and a pic would be nearly impossible considering I'd have to tear apart my trunk to get the image you're looking for.

Sorry

Would you describe the symptoms as the sound of road debris hitting in the wheel well or under the back of the car. I get this pinging, ticking sound constantly and thought maybe I had dirt flying out of my tires and hitting the underside of the car somehow, but it seems to happen way too much for that.

That probably is the noise caused by the issue of this thread. If it's road debris, then a single debri could hit the wheel well more than once. But this noise is always once at a time. If it's road debris, then it shouldn't happen when going at 5 mph in a parking lot, but this noise happens even at 5 mph. I described the noise as pop/click/tap/tick, but it could also be described as ping/snap.

Well I would say I have it then. Developed around 2k miles. Pretty annoying, but it is not constant yet.

I just started to notice this issue on a roadtrip to indy (yes a lot of intimate time with my baby). Started (or I just noticed this issue) at around 3500 miles and still happens now 5k+ miles.

I got my car back from the dealer today. So far, the news is not good.

Issue #1: Daytime Running Light delete (turn off the DRLs)
There does seem to be consistency to @Hawaiian's unfortunate experience being locked out by the new ECU (Thread: BEWARE DRL TSB). Though the dealer and field rep didn't reference anything specific about the lockout issue, there is no ETA on when the new ECU might arrive (though they did order one for me).

Issue #2: Air Conditioning Chirp
(A/C chirps every 15-20 sec. while car is in motion)
Toyota is aware of this issue and is currently collecting information to develop a fix. At the moment, there is no ETA on when/if this fix will happen.

Issue #3: Speaker Buzz from Passenger Side with Bass
I was informed that it is normal for the door panels to buzz when there are songs with bass. I will be working on a "fix" of my own with Dynamat or one of its related brethren.

Issue #4: The tapping from the rear deck
I saved the best for last (or did I?). At first, the dealer gave me everybody's favorite response from a dealer when you have a noise issue:could not duplicate concern at this time. I drove down to the dealer, was able to immediately replicate the noise, and took the shop foreman around with me who was able to pinpoint the noise to the rear of the vehicle. He told me that they would do some research and attempt a repair when I brought it back in for the ECU installation later.

AND THEN I GOT HOME....

I parked the car in my garage, and, now, I am a victim of THE CHIRP. This is not the A/C chirp, this is worse than that - this is a consistent, constant, very pronounced chirp that occurs the entire time the car is at idle.

The definition of "irony": having your car develop a new issue while it's at the dealer trying to be repaired.

In case you're not familiar with this chirp issue, check out this thread: Engine idle chirping (cricket) noise poll.

Holy sweet mother of all that is wrong with the world, this noise is unbelievable (particularly in an enclosed space like my garage)!

Current Status:

#1 - I left a voicemail with my dealer informing them of this ALL-NEW issue plus letting them know that the shop foreman was able to hear the noise.

#2 - My Scion HQ Case Manager is out today, but tomorrow he will be calling and I'll be giving him an update.

#3 - I intend to schedule another appointment with my dealer to have them repair the deck tapping and this new ungodly chirp from Hell. I will not be waiting for the new ECU to arrive before they attempt to fix these issues.

I wish I found this fun.
