Engine cuts out

When I picked up the 86 it had the check engine light on the dealer got a technician to fix it. After I took the 86 got less than one mile and the engine stopped. The car was towed back to the dealer and supposedly fix after two days and 70 miles of test driving, however a knocking sound remains.. The dealer claims it was running retarded. Has anyone else had this problem??

Theres so many pages of stuff for me to read through but i dont know if it has already been stated or if anybody noticed this but i've had the cricket noise since my first fillup. I did put shell 93 10% ethanol inside and experienced the noise. I then put sunoco and the cricket noise when away but came back but not as loud. I went back to shell to see if the noise came back louder and it didn't. So the noise hasnt been that loud but yesterday it was super hot and the noise was louder than ever! It sounded like it was 10pm and i was in the forrest. I think crickets were actually responding back to my car lol. But has anybody noticed the noise getting louder when its extremely hot outside.

Unless this "easy solution" comes with some unintended consequences.

haha i feel the same.

Mine gets louder when it gets heatsoaked in traffic. It sounds obnoxious in my garage or going through a drive-through. Using 94 +10% ethanol her in Canada.

Compression ratio. I believe it is 12.5 to 1. But it shouldn't need 94 if the factory says 91 is good enough.

Wow... just came back from my dealer... WTF! I hate dealership.. the BRZ is my 26th car and its my first brand new one... Its all in my head... It's normal, the car is supposed to "ping" at high temps... Then I try to explain them WITH my video ^^^ that in no $""(*% way this is pinging... They keep on telling me that they called Subaru Canada and its all Okay.

Thats where I got mad... Telling them that the car is a "/$_"/*% Two... thousand... thirteen model and it's impossible that it was designed/engineered to sound like that...

Anyways, I left, and I'll be waiting for a lucky one here to find out exactly how to fix this.

Its not the 200 HP but the fact that this engine is a fairly high state of tune. At two liters and 200 HP that is 100 HP/liter and N/A at that.

Consider the 2.0L turbo in my GTI. 200 HP with a turbo vs. the BRZ's 200 N/A 200 HP.

Granted I have bucket loads of torque in my GTI from the turbo.

I guess I was being too broad. I am just wondering if all of the technology was necessary for an engine with this kind of power to be used in this car?

Update:

My car still has the chirp. It's noticeably louder in warm temperatures. Have an appointment with the dealer for Tuesday to get it checked out. Had the tech come and listen so it wasn't just my description they were going off of.

Another heads up, i called Scion and I told them that i felt deceived because the motor didnt sound like this from the factory. I basically told if i knew the motor was going to sound like this I wouldn't have purchased it as it is very emberassing to me.

I know some people don't care, but every other sports car out there has a great engine sound and I could have picked up any other car but I have wanted this car for a year...so I'm really bummed. The car looks great!

Anyways back on my story, i told them i felt deceived and lied to, and they were quick to tell me that they would send me an arbitration form!!!!

WTH Toyota...i just want this fixed

Such as? Better MPG and a smoother engine?

For the record, the noise gets louder with hotter conditions because it's caused by friction.

They've had plenty of time to fix this. How about taking it to an automotive engineer and getting a report to present to Toyota and post it on the net too?
It's getting tiresome reading the uninformed posts that happily accept this as being normal because that's what the dealers are parroting.

I'd avoid driving it hard, or at all. Call Scion corporate. Tell them you are aware of a manufacturing defect and you want it fixed ASAP. You shouldn't have to give them any benefit of the doubt, this is a brand new car.

I really think we need to be aggressive about the issues we are all experiencing. If we escalate this to the point that upper level or Japanese management is alerted, we will get much faster results.

You guys remember when those floor mats were moving too much in the Toyota's a few years ago? The CEO of Toyota bowed to a congressional panel in shame... This is just as shameful in my opinion. My car died 3 times less than 24 hours after purchasing it. It's an embarrassment.

Agreed. This is the age where you can blow up an issue really quick on Facebook, Twitter, etc. The time is about right for this one to get blown up so that proper attention is given...or, if proper attention *is* being given behind the scenes at Subaru/Toyota, now is the time for them to officially recognize the issue and assure customers that a fix is in the works. Random dealers or technicians saying they know about the issue isn't the same as corporate saying something.

The Mazda CX-5 2L direct injection engine is 13:1 and requires regular low octane fuel.
So it's not the compression ratio. The 86 has been tuned to use 98 octane here and I believe 93 octane[same] in the US.

Its the direct injection system that makes that noise. Its normal and you hear it on any and all DI systems. You wouldnt believe how many months Audi spent attempting to explain that when the FSI motor was released with DI. cest la vie.

Dont compare this to the floor mats... that was complete bullshit period. If you are having problems with your car suddenly dying, then take the shit to the dealer. If they wont help you go to a different one. Idk why this is a constant problem with you people. You have a new car that is under warranty grow some fuckin balls and get it taken care of instead of coming on here to whine about it.

As for the chirp and people saying... ohhh I dont like it, its a noise im not used to... this is the thing from the 90s when people were bitching about the 4runners and a few other cars "ticking" which was the fuel injection then. If it isnt causing a problem then stop wasting toyotas time on it. Next it will be "I dont like the noise of the A/C after you turn the car off".
