I was a child when exploding domestic vehicles and consumer protection investigations were part of the public zeitgeist*, so although I am familiar with the Pinto fuel tank issue and actively remember the Chevy truck exploding side tanks, I’m unclear about one aspect of the Pinto issue:
Why was it a problem the Pinto hung the fuel tank exposed behind the rear axle, but not a problem that the Mustangs from 74-04 did too? |

A buddy of mine in high school had a Pinto. It was ugly, but was actually a good little car. Had a little 4 banger with a 4MT. We drove that thing everywhere, until coming back from skiing one time it fried a piston. I think it had somewhere in the range of 150k miles on it.

I remember them, but we never had one to my knowledge. My Grandparents had one in their living room but it didn't work due to a blown tube they didn't want to spend the money on replacing.
My earliest memory involves a B&W television (JFKs assassination and the aftermath).

It was all my grandparents in Quebec had until well into the '70s. There was no point in them having a TV as they only got one station and it was of course French. They didn't speak French. They finally got TV when cable came to their small town in '74 or '75.
Theirs looked just like this.

We had a couple of these in the house. Maybe a generation newer? Still fascinated me, crackling as they warmed.
