Yep...most of the other models (Subaru) already have. It allows for a larger (stronger) bearing.

The wheels appear to be similar in style to the GR Yaris, but the construction looks cast instead of forged. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of them, but they aren't horrible-looking. Better than the machined face on the 1st gen. Appears to be an 18" wheel, with what I presume are 225/40-18 tires. Likely a 7.5" wide wheel, but it might be 8". Bolt pattern still looks like 5x100 to me, and we can assume a 56.1mm bore. Happily, this would mean that many/most of the wheels for the 1st gen will fit on the 2nd. The tires look like Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, which will be a massive improvement over the Primacy's on the 1st gen. Quite frankly, they should have changed the OE tire in 2017 with the refresh.
I expect that the 2nd gen is based on the same architecture as the 1st gen. There were always conflicting reports of the 2nd gen being based on the original chassis, the TNG architecture, or cancelled. I read some rumors out of Japan that development was a cluster, which I take to mean that management changed their minds well into development (I know how frustrating this can be, in my own line of work). I'd bet a beer that the 2nd gen was originally planned to be on the TNG platform, but later switched to use the original (modified Impreza) architecture. Comparing to the first generation, the spy shots and substantial rumors started much later in development for the second generation. I remember talk of the twins starting in 2008 and they didn't go on sale until 2012. That's four years of rumors, spy shots, and concepts. This time around, it seems like there was little of substance until about 1yr ago, when we got confirmation that the car was being developed. Shortly after, we got Nurburgring spy shots. I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised that Subaru is unveiling the car this year. I was expecting it to be next year, with sales starting late in 2021, or even 2022. Given the events of this year, I figured development would be delayed and Subaru wouldn't want to risk launching a sports car into a financially cautious market. But given the years-long product planning cycle, delaying the BRZ launch would likely interfere with the next WRX/STi, which are arguably more important and profitable products. Softened demand at launch may actually help the car long term, as there won't be such a spike in demand, and average annual sales might stay higher as the economy recovers. Anyways, I like what I see so far. It doesn't look like they messed with the original's formula. I'll probably wait to get one for a year or two, so all the early adopters can deal with bad injector seals, coil packs, and valve springs. It'll also give me time to decide what to do with my 2015, which is well on its way to being a dedicated track and autox car.

I don't think it's launching this fall, the Subaru press release describes it as a premiere, so a reveal of the final car is what I understand. I believe spring 2021 is still the target launch date.

It’s hard to see much detail in those shots, but that is probably the closest thing we’ve seen yet to the actual 2nd gen. The TNGA architecture is really awesome so I’m crossing my fingers it could be using that platform. I’m not sure how easily a RWD setup would be on TNGA. Imagine this curve ball, what if they used a Toyota sourced engine?! I mean Toyota owns a big stake in Subaru, so they call the shots.
Either way I think it’s looking great so far, and staying very close to the 1st gen design language. Love those wheels also. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
