I am buying a sonic blue GTS AUTO

$40,349.98. The dealer said they will register it in their state with a 3 month rego and not chagre me for the costs (so they can claim the sale). Does this mean i avoid stamp duty?

1 week until my 2000KM drive home in my new baby - named Tiffany (all my vehicles have to have a female name starting with the manufacturer's letter)

You should check with your local department of transport how the stamp duty works - you may have to pay it twice. There is some rule that if you own the car less than 12 months... its to stop people buying interstate to pay less stamp duty.

I would rather the dealer not register it, get a temporary moving permit (or ask to borrow dealer plates and send them back) to drive it home and then register in your own state and pay the duty.

No. Stamp duty is payable upon transfer to your name. It cannot be avoided. Stamp duty will be around $1250 depending on your location. Either way it sounds dodgy. I've never heard of such a thing. Cars can be sold without registration, but stamp duty will always be charged upon registration application. There's no way around that. Also, if they're interstate they can't supply a green slip to you.

ahhh ok, then it will be registered to the dealer for 3 monhts before the transfer to my name it seems. As it is a new car, i just have to take it to QLD transport for an inspection prior to transferring to QLD

That's dealer warranty, requires you to only service the car through that dealer and is very limited in what it covers.

All good if it's thrown in for free, but think twice about whether you actually want to use it.

If the dealer is to put 3 months rego on the car that also means they have paid stamp duty. You have bought the car new in your name and if they do the rego for 3 months it would have to put into your name so that means paying stamp duty. Stamp Duty will not have to be paid again in another state if your still keeping the rego in your name...

In Victoria that's not an option 3 month rego.

Stamp duty is paid when the car is being transferred in your name.

If you live in VIC and buy the car from NSW. you will pay NSW duty and drive the car back to VIC and transfer it VIC rego . ( in this instance you have already paid duty in NSW and the car is in your name so you just pay REGO cost to change over the plates)

How is a dealer able to register the car in a state the driver does not live in? He would require a forwarding address in that state and a PO box won't suffice.

That makes sense. Original post made it sound like he wasn't paying stamp duty at all. There's no way around that. So essentially he'll be up for rego and CTP earlier than most.

and yes your are right, In order to register a car in a different state you do need a residential address i.e physical address.

For folks who buy interstate , they usually pay RRP + dealer delivery and drive the car back to their respective states and register themselves which is when they pay stamp duty plus rego cost

Nope, thats pretty much bang on RRP. I got ~$500 off mine though for $42,000 OR - exact same spec!
