Hells bells, we had variable compression engines commercially produced back in the 30s.

Iffen ya don't believe that, just try starting one of these suckers without knowing about it -

I had at least a couple of cars that had variable compression. They weren't supposed to be variable but they were.

Mine varied depending on what cylinder you picked.

Being able to tune the compression ratio gives you the best of both worlds in the same engine.
Absolutely but Nissan's solution seems somewhat elaborate to me. I agree with the poster who called it "marketing "

No messing with that steering set-up.. couldn't be more direct. I wonder if anyone has tried a similar mod on their Twin.

Can you describe a simpler solution to achieve variable compression?

Hole in the block could be one such 'simpler solution' to achieve variable compression..

Could even make it controllable.

I wouldn't look for it in the first place. Not that big of an issue. All those reciprocating pieces. How about a good head unit? Or exhaust systems that dont rot out in 2 years?
