I am not going to go into detail as Dog did but really need to counter your statement that "everyone fell in behind him"
Hitler got into power as the leader of the German Workers Party. It didn't become the Nazi party until later.
As bad as the Great Depression was on the US, Germany was almost obliterated by it.The workers Party promised jobs and restoration of the country as a whole. Even then they took under 40% of the votes in the election so did not have full control. They swindled control through misdirection during an incident and Hitler had full power. By this point the general populations acceptance of them meant nothing and they started replacing leaders of all areas with party members. If you resisted you went to prison or died.
It is estimated that by 1940 the actual Nazi party members totaled about 10% of the population and under 2% of the military. Unfortunately those groups were the ones in control and the population had no choice but to follow along or die. Much of the population had no idea what the whole "master race" thing was all about and didn't care since there were jobs and money was flowing again. The fact that the money was a doomed war economy seems obvious today but at the time people didn't really see it.
All in all the overall population were not Nazis, did not care about the Reich, had no idea that the bulk of the atrocities were happening, didn't want the war even though they fought, and did NOT just "fall into line". They started out following a party that promised them food and a roof and ended up with no food and few roofs!
I guess I could've worded my question better. I didn't mean the whole country. I meant the people that did actually follow him. The 10%/2% you mentioned. My question was just, if those guys really were drinking his kool-aid, why didn't they care he didn't fit the bill? But like I surmised from Dog's post, he just so happened to be the guy in the charge and the one doing it, so he got a pass for having the power.

He did fit the bill at the time. You are looking back with knowledge of all the events. They came across them as they occurred without the benefit of the whole picture or what was yet to come. Keep in mind that many of his right hand men were just as psycho as he was. Many of his senior officers were not Nazis and opposed much of what was happening. They pretty much all ended up dead well before the end of the war. The people followed along at first because the party (not just Hitler he was not the one man show it appears now) offered a glimmer of hope in what was at that time a hopeless period for them.

Edit Sorry I just realized that you meant the Aryan "bill"! The whole Aryan thing was not the focus early in his power. It came through more as propaganda and justification later on in the Party's existence. Very very few of the Nazi leadership fit the Aryan bill as developed. They were also not quite the "white supremacist" as we think of today. They didn't hate all other races (just the Jews, Gypsy's and Bolsheviks) they had no issue with other races other than the Aryan was better.

Hell, they even had black army divisions when the US would only let them be cooks and stewards! They had both volunteers and conscripts that were Asian, Indian and Muslim as well so were 100 times more diversified than most of the allies at the time.

Ya'll don't have to tell me about it, I lived it (well, two years of it).

I remember the first time I saw my father, when he had just got back from Europe. My mother had shown me a lot of pictures of him in uniform. She stood me on the back porch of my grandparents farm house, when this man ran out of a car with a scratchy wool uniform on and grabbed me and hugged me. My mother said I was scared and cried.

Yep, I was only two years old, but I remember it.

Sorry about the history detour, but if I wasn't asking about that I would just be complaining about tax regulations and my fear of being audited because I didn't fill out the right form or register for the correct permit. Maybe I should hire an accountant?
